Carrera rear engine sheet metal removal question?

On a Carrera (which has the single pipe to the heat exchangers protruding up a few inches through the rear sheet metal next to the distributor), is it possible to remove the rear piece of sheet metal without removing this pipe from below (along with the muffler, brackets etc.)? There appears to be a single bolt on the left side chain cover housing which prevents the sheet metal from being able to slide up over the pipe, but is that the only thing? Obviously, I'd rather not remove more than is necessary, and thought I'd ask here first...thanks!

Bump, with a pic to clarify what I'm talking about... has anyone BTDT that can offer advice? If I remove the lower bolt, will I then be able to clear the pipe (and remove the rear piece of sheet metal), or is removing the pipe the only option. I don't want to remove the muffler (and pipe) unless I REALLY have to...would removing the bumper facilitate matters (along w/ a partial engine drop)? Help & Thanks!

Yes Keith, it comes off without removing the muffler. There are three pieces; one across the back with the pipe coming through the hole, and two that run along the sides above the valve covers. It takes a little wiggling, but it should come off.

Thanks Zoanas, and I'll answer to 'Toby' or whatever else you call me
I've already removed the side pieces, but the rear piece will not clear the pipe (...the bolt on the chain cover housing is blocking it). It shouldn't be an issue to remove 'this' bolt, or is there a 'better' way? Thanks again...

ps: I can lower the engine for the removal of that piece from below if necessary...

you won't have much luck getting the rear tin off with the muffler in place unless the engine is lowered. that heat tube would also have to be removed to do it. probably easier to undo 3 muffler bolts and two straps than have to disconnect all the stuff to lower the engine safely.

John, I already have everything loose and can easily lower the engine if that will facilitate things. (Thanks for your help w/ removing the motor mount bolts on the other thread!). As you can see in the pic, since my muffler is only a couple of years old, I could also easily remove the 3 bolts to the premuffler (I used plenty of anti-seaze) and the straps if necessary. My concern is where/how the 'heat tube' attaches to the heat exchangers...as far as I know, they've never been disconnected, and I don't know what's under the orange 'rubbery' sleeve (or if I will destroy/mar the sleeve in removing it). Do you still recommend removing the heat tube (and muffler, brackets, etc.), or could I lower the motor a bit and get enough clearance (after maybe removing the one bolt on the chain cover housing if necessary)? Thanks a bunch!

ps: Do you have a favorite year/era for the good 'ole GD...I'm partial to the early 70's stuff, and have lots of live shows prior to '90...I'd be glad to send you a couple on cd if you'd like, since I can't buy you a six pack of your favorite brew

They are just 4 screw clamps that hold the heat crossover pipe to the exchangers, the muffler, and that pipe will have to be removed in order to remove the rear tin, as it comes out from the bottom of the car. I just went thru this when I replaced my tensioners.

Yes, I went home yesterday (before reading your post), removed the heat tube and 'discovered' that it was just the four clamps on the outside of the orange 'rubber sleeve' holding them together (...pleasant surprise)! It seems like everything else that I've tackled (with the original exhaust system) has been a bear to remove, so I was gun shy. It turns out I was concerned about a non-issue...thanks to all!

ps: I personally don't see how anyone could remove the tin with the heat tube in place (whether the motor was lowered or not...).
I tried numerous approaches, and I just could not get it to clear the tube...

It might on a different year and engine, but on a 3.2, I don't think it would ever come out unless the crossover pipe is removed.

What a total brain lock. I apologize if you spent additional frustration on this, Keith. I had the motor out of the car when I mounted/unmounted the tin. I don't know what I was thinking.

PS, one of the Bay Area Pelicans is k911sc, whose name is Toby. I thought I was responding to him initially.

Noooo problem...I realized that you'd confused the screen names before you edited your post...heck, I'll still answer to 'Toby' if someone's trying to help
