How hard will it be to re-paint the targa bar?

PO had painted my 81' SC Targa Bar to match the body. Its a metallic BMW Blue.

I don't mind the body colour, but I'd like to go back to a black Targa bar.

Will a body shop have to remove my rear glass and all of the hard ware?
Should they sand off all of the old paint?

Lastly......how is the Targa script attached? Will they need to remove it?

Some people can pull of the Targa script with dental floss. If it's mounted with pegs, but a new one to figure out whee the existing pegs would be and drill it out.

I'm going to paint mine in place if I ever get to it. I will do a lot of masking first.

To prep and paint the targa bar properly, you need to remove the bar itself..

The bar is simply an alu skin that covers the actual metal of the roll over hoop.. It comes off rather easily -- read this for a howto Removing the targa bar?

The targa script can be either double sided taped on or secured with pegs and 'nuts'. You will see what I mean by pegs and nuts from the thread above..

Once the bar is off, the paint shop will know what to do to prep and paint. The original color *and texture* is on that thread as well IIRC

Good luck

I think the bar is stainless steel. The one on my '77 was. I sanded and primed it with XIM and painted it with Rustoleum Satin Black. Both in spray cans. With the proper preparation, primer and a little patience, your job will look as good as new. On or off the car. It lasted for years.

Zeke,

You are probably right. When I took mine off, it was so light that I thought it had to be Alu, but alu is simply too soft in that thickness..

Either way, AL or SS, it requires a better primer than what you would use on the body, IMO.

It was my original impression that the bar was Al was well, but the fellow who did the powder coating told me that it was in fact SS when I got it back...
