oil level

hey everyone,
I wanted to test the starter out on the 73. The engine (everything) was empty of oil. no oil in the car. I read waynes book and he said that you should put 9 quarts in the car. There are 9 quarts in the car right now and the starter works. here are my questions:
oil level on the dash says that the engine is totally full. But the check engine oil indicator keeps flashing. why would it say that it is full when it says that it isn't? Also when i check the dipstick it is not hitting any oil. NONE. should i put more quarts in? if so how many?
thanks for all the help.

I have a 73 E Targa. Here is what I think you need to know.

1. The oil sensor blinks on the dash when the emergency brake is pulled up. It has nothing to do with the oil level, unless the car is driving, and you know that the brake is off.

2. You can't measure oil on these cars while they are sitting cold. You must start it up, warm it up, and then while the engine is running, and on a level surface, pull the dipstick and measure the oil.

3. I don't know why they have the oil level guage on the car. It never seems to make sense to me while I'm driving it.

Whatever you do, don't fill it with oil till the stick measures while the engine is off. You will be very very sorry.

It is a dry sump engine, and this is the way it works.

To be honest with you, I never paid attention to the pressure, I am always looking at the oil temp gauge. Someone else is going to have to answer that one for you.

22psi at idle is fine. 22psi down the road at 3000 - 4000 rpm is WAY TOO LOW!!!
A good rule of thumb is 10 psi to 1 bar (~15psi) per 1000r/min. Max pressure warm is generally 60 to 80 psi (4.5 - 7 bar).
