Adding Cruise Control Option To 74-77 2.7 CIS
 

Can I add Cruise Control option to my 74 911s (77 CIS) 915 trans. relatively easy? Originally car is not equipped with this option. Control stalk, Control brain, Control Servo is obviously required. What other stuff do I need? Some sort of brake switch? Special wiring harness? Special vaccum system? Anyone have any experience with this, or know of any tech. articles regarding adding this option?SmileWavy

Some have said the hand throttle between the seats can act as a sort of "poor man's" cruise control. I wouldn't recommend this, however.

That's an interesting thought that never really crossed my mind.
Anyone know what year range cruise controls will work on my 74?

'special vacuum system' consists of a 'T' and a hose
In addition to the control stalk, you also need the top and bottom plastic shrouds around the steering column
you also need a brake swtich.

You loom *might* already have the appropriate connectors and wiring for cruise. It might be just a matter of finding the connectors.

I dont have any experience retrofitting factory cruise (cuz $$ ) .. I went with an aftermartket unit (under $150 ) and fitted that in about 2 hours..

I havent researched any aftermarket kits (didn't think there would be any for a 74). Where did you get yours? I'd be open to aftermarket.

Well, I am in Aus so the kits here would be different..

Aftermarket kits don't care what car you are utting them on . They are 'universal'.

Usually, they have their own speed sensor arrangement ( magnets secured to a driveshaft and a sensor secured to the car)

They then have their own actuator which connects to your throttle linkage. And then have their own control unit and switches to sense braking ( or they tie into your brake light curcuit )

now since the 911s drive arrangement is more like front wheel drive ( cv jointed axles ), follow the directions for front wheel drive.

The audiovox ccs100 works nicely on the P-cars. A lot of times you can find them for $100 or less.

You are beter off going with an after market CC instead of trying to buy and install a factory cc.

Buying a new factory cc unit (if you could find one) would be $$$$$$$$$$.

Installing a used factory unit is chancy since you don't know if it still work.

I have a factory cc unit on my PORSCHE but only used it when I brought the car to see if it still work.

You have the ultimate driving machine DRIVE IT don't set it on CC and cruise down the road like a soccer mom.

I realize that I have a PORSCHE, and not a VOLVO.
It still would be nice for long highway trips, and I enjoy being a "Porsche Driving Soccer Dad".

I REALLY enjoy being able to set the cruise on the interstate, and if you need to gas on it you still can. A lot less fatigue on trips. I don't do soccer.

I installed aftermarket cruise to avoid speeding tickets ( here in aus - limit is 100kph (62mph)). On the highway, just resting my foot on the accel, my speed would creep up to 120-130kph. Not good since the 'tolerance' for speeding is 1 kph ! Any other car and one would notice they are going significantly faster - not in the 911 however..

YES, 90 mph seems to be the perfect cruising speed. You ever notice how every car has it's own perfect "cruising speed"? Like my bimmer is 80, and my 911 is 90. Unfortunately the "one size fits all" speed limits are set for grandma and her k-car. Last summer I was crusin along with top off only to notice the red lights in the rear view, and then the speedo at 90 (in a 55 mph). Luckily, the trooper was a young guy, walked up with a big grin and said "took me a while to catch up with you", and ended up letting me go. I'm hoping cruise will help.

About 110 appeared to be the perfect cruising speed on the 930, but for obvious reasons I had to keep it slower. ;)
