tensioner chain housing leak
My '87 Carrera's chain housing leaks (seems like left side only). Looks like the muffler, distributor cap, belts, etc will have to be moved away. What else should I tackle while there? I thought about painting the shroud and blades.
Oh yeah, my wrench quoted me $500 to replace the gaskets. The parts from Pelican (both gaskets and hardware) come up to only $10.25. Labor is $95/hr so it'll take my mechanic 5 hrs to do the job. Does that sound about right? |

Can you clarify if this is the actual chain housing cover and that you aren't talking about the other side of the housing, where the the cam thrust plate o-ring and gasket are? The latter would leak from the back side of the chain housing, between it and the cam housing.
If it is indeed the cover, it is a job that you can do yourself, no problem. I would think that it would take me 5 hours, but I am pretty sure a good wrench can do much better. You should see if John Walker has some input. Don't forget to clean the heck out of the surfaces and check the cover for flatness. George |

George is right. Front = easy, Back = retiming the cams, difficult
