2.4 T engine what is it worth?
Is this an engine worth getting for my 914? Would I need to carb it? as it WAS MFI but is missing the pump and injectors....OR am I as ignorant of these engines as any VW engine guy can be? Here are some pics and it has been sitting in a barn (the PO says) for 23 yrs. Any feed back is appreciated
Thanks Joshua http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1110762340.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1110762348.jpg My baby is here http://www.daybydayco.com/car4web/914.html |
I wouldn't offer anything for it. 23 years in a barn guarantees a rebuild. You could find a decent running engine for less then it will cost you to rebuild this engine.

What Kurt said plus that is not an MFI engine, that is CIS on top, if its a T, its a 2.4 T from 73.5 with CIS......only thing good about that would be it should have a useful 7R crankcase with small spigots
|
Agreed. Also, check the serial number and the type number found on the case low and right of the fan as seen from the back. It will be a short number with a [/]. This may be a 2.4 and it may not be. 2.4 CIS (it is NOT an MFI motor) motors were made only a short time in '73. Frankly, I'm not an expert, but the so called 73 1/2 CIS motors may have already been fitted as 2.7s.
Either way, Kurt is right, it's only worth what the parts will bring if any are usable. I bought something like this just to take it apart to see what's inside. I paid 300 for the adventure. Turned out that I got my money back just selling trinkets off the thing. EDIT: Dennis, above, beat me to some of the info and he put it better than I did. |
If your hands on, only farm out the machine work, and get that engine for next to nothing and can get some old carbs in good shape for next to nothing, you could build a nice engine out of that for about 5-7K, if you pay someone else double it.
For that price you should be able to buy a decent 3.0 or maybe even a 3.2 from some 911 guy upgrading to a 3.6. That is probably where you will get your best value. Other side of the coin, you don't have 5-6K in your pocket and figure you'll try to get that running until you can rebuild it. If it turns over anything is possible you'll just need to know a little more than just what a screw driver is for, and you'll need to be luckier than I am, which isn't much! Good luck either way Milt, we got Dan Byers out here last year, are you the next one who will be crazy enough to make the gruppeB pilgrimidge to the mid west for Shawns car show???? |
That was or is a 2.4T motor, Notice the injectors in the heads themselves and not in the runners. Also it looks like it was from a sportomatic, Notice the oil pump where the MFI pump drive should be. If it's cheap enough, it wouldn't be bad as a base for a 2.4-2.8L motor, but it's still expensive, since it would require rebuilding.
Pro's moderately rare case, strongest mag case and small spigots standard 70.4mm crank and rods Cons, 1/2 year only heads. If you get those injector holes bored out and plugged then they'll be just fine for a 2.2-2.8L motor. I belive this motor has relatively small 32mm ports. Iron cylinders Low compression pistons Mild cams 1/2 year only induction |
Thanks every one,
You have answered my question, in a nut shell it aint worth much. I am a hands on guy and I may offer the guy something just to , and I quote "take it apart" I would love to know the inards of a 911 vs a 914 (VW) engine. The guy said it turns over easy enough and mentioned somthing about it having been fogged before storage. Just to recap the basics are good case poor everything else....right? Joshua |
I might be selling my 2.4 with s pistons and e cams. I was thinking around 2500.00
|
I took one of these 2.4TK's apart as a core motor last year. Yes, the heads have 32 mm ports which would need to be opened up some if you wanted anything more then 160 +/- HP. The case is the desirable small spigot 7R case. The pistons are iron. If you can get it for a few hundred bucks (no more then $1000), it's most likely an OK deal if you wanted to rebuild it for your 914. You could recoup some of your costs selling off the parts that you don't want.
