Painted 67 911 S
Hey guys. I just finish painting on Saturday a 1967 911S for a client. It's not mine. DARN! The car was blue and needed to go back to it's orignial color, Light Ivory. I stripped the car to metal and bondo work had to be redone for none of the panels were straight. I finished the car with a two-stage Base Coat and Urethane Clear. I am now buffing it to a mirror finish. If you want more pix's email me. Will be happy to share. Okay, keep it fun and safe.

Looks great! Is there any chance that you could explain to me the process that you used to strip the car? I need to do this to my 76 and would really appreciate an experts opinion on what process is best. Also how long did you leave the car in bare metal before spraying on a layer of primer? Thanks for any information.

What color and texture did you paint the trunk?
That's original light ivory, 6604? Looks nice.

Rich, here is what I recommend on stripping a car. If you know that the car has several layers of paint including primers, sealers, paint, clear, etc., I suggest you first scratch the surface of the paint. I used 36 grit paper on my dual action air sander. This will help cut down the number of coats you will need when using the stripper. I like to use Aircraft paint stripper. The stuff is very popular so you can get in most hardware stores. If you are only stripping the outer panels and not the jams, I recommend that you use a strip of Duck tape on any of the reveals since you don't want the paint remover running all inside the jams and making more work for you later. The areas where the Duck tape was hiding meaning the edges, you can later come back with a 40 grit paper and remove. I then put on a heavy and even coat of the paint remover over the entire panel and cover immediatly with a large plastic bag. The bag helps to keep all the chemicals from escaping and making the paint remover bite stronger into the paint. Let it sit for about 10 minutes out of the sun then take a scraper to it and go to work. You may need to use several coats. MAKE SURE YOU USE A RESPIRATOR.
After you are down to metal, I used a metal treatment and sprayed one coat of self-etching primer. I would not let the metal sit for more than one night. After the etching primer is on, you can go ahead and do your body work. Still, with the etching primer I would not leave the car open to wet climate. Rich, stripping an entire car can get overwhelming so I recommend that you take one panel at a time. Oh and make fun! Hope this helps. Go to work now. : )

John, the color code is 6604 Light Ivory. Good eye! The trunk on this car was well taken care of so I did not strip. However, it was painted 6604. Thanks

Biosurfer1, I used a combination of Mequiars and 3M. I start by color sanding with 1500 to sand out the orange peel, dirt, etc. To start cutting into the clear with Mequiars Diamond Cut with a wool pad and buffer spinning at 1400. Then move to Mequiars Swirl Remover/Polish with a softer pad and spin buffer at 1500. After this, I use 3M Perfect It III Finishing Glaze. I use a soft pad and apply by hand. I wait any where from 3-6 month before applying any wax. When I apply the wax, I use Mequiars NXT Generation Tech Wax. Must say Mequiars has really step up to the plate in the past couple of years. The wax is really good stuff.
Hope this helps and best wishes. DO NOT burn through the clear.

Just wanted to say thanks for the information on stripping the car. I would be stripping original paint off of the car. So that is what I have to go through the car has never been repainted at all. THanks again for the hints and tips on the process.
Rich
