147,000 and running like a top SC

Had a back fire so bad through the intake I had to re-epoxy the pop off valve. Ran pressure checks all normal. Went through a dozen troubleshooting procedures. Still running like crap. Adjusted timing and mixture 1/8 turn clockwise and BINGO! like I said. "Running like a top". So before you go through what I did (four days of crap). Timing and mixture.

Several years ago, looking for a 'winter beater' to save my toys from the salt here in MN, I stumbled across an already rusty '68 Mercedes-Benz 280S. It wasn't running, and the owner was fed up with the car....he had recently replaced the cylinder head for $$$$.

I paid him $100 (yes, one hundred) and trailered the car home. I looked over the car, and everything seemed to be in fine shape. It cranked fine, but wouldn't even think of firing. It had spark and fuel.

Then I looked at the timing. The screw that held down the distributor tab had loosened, allowing the distributor to rotate itself out of time.

$0 and a timing light got the car purring like a kitten. I drove it a couple winters until I found my '77 240D. I sold it for much more than $100. ;)

Always look at spark, fuel, and timing!
