Updates on various projects

930 heater ducts
I am making slight mods to the mold to clean up the look and make production easier. I did my first sample assembly yesterday, but the resin for the inner half didn't 'kick' very well, so it looks like freeze-dried ass. The outer half was perfect though, not a single void at all. This was just a test layup, so I didn't do the mounting flange.

Cab hardtop
The hardtop mold is almost done, at least the outer shell anyway. The mold-let for the inner mount will have to be done afterwards.

Holy cow! Are you using another top as an original to create a mold with?

widebody911 03-15-2005 06:26 AM

Basicallly, yes

I'm surprised I didn't get more comments, but maybe people didn't notice because of the subject.

Very cool Thom. Makes me wish I had a Cab, but hell, I just wish I had a 911. Hmm, i guess the miata is a cab, but I don't think your top will fit.

Jandrews 03-16-2005 05:35 AM

Thom,

Those heater ducts look great. What did you decide to do about the heater block-off plates? I'd be interested in a set of those if you decide to do them.

Thom, very nice. I'm ready for finished product on the heat ducts.

greglepore 03-16-2005 06:05 AM

Thom-again, thanks for taking this on. Can't wait to get a set of the heater backdate parts. Do you have any rough (I mean that no one will hold you to it) estimate of the pricing?

widebody911 03-16-2005 06:19 AM

While it would be easy for me to make the block off plates, Damon aka Series900 already has them available. I'm hesitant to comment pricing at this point.

I don't suppose the idea of a targa hardtop has crossed your fertile mind, has it? ;-)

Nice work. Now, how about a high quality, low cost ducktail that takes the standard size grille?

FenderGuy 03-16-2005 11:30 AM

I agree on the ducktail....I'll take one!!!

Doesn't Pelican already sell one?

thabaer 03-16-2005 12:23 PM

Thom,

What happened with the pan you did earlier on ? Did you determine if it really was a stressed member and glass wouldn't be right for it ?

widebody911 03-16-2005 12:25 PM

JMPRO does targa hardtops and Pelican sells them.

I never determined if the crossmember cover was structural, but I personally don't think it is. I still sell them, although I need to make a new mold now that I have a better idea of how to do it.

RickM 03-16-2005 12:27 PM

I think JMPro sold the rights off to the manufacturer. I spent 10 mins searching this site for the top but gave up after not finding.....

re the steering rack cover: I'm sure it's not a structural piece. But I did post earlier that it functions as a rock guard. I'm going to keep my steel one until somebody fabs a nice Al one or something - I won't trust FG down there.... maybe Kevlar would work tho...

If you want to pay the materials difference, I can do one in either carbon-kevlar or straight kevlar for ya.
