What about these guys?

I wonder if a group buy might be possible as shipping 5 of them to the US has got to be cheaper than sending one....

In my searches for possibly solutions I read several posts that talk about the multiple stages of the defrost switch (one pull out for defrost, 2 clicks out for super defrost, rotate to the right for heated mirrors). My switch will pull out but only one click. It does however rotate one click to the right. I am assuming this means I have heated mirrors but not the upgraded defrost setting (which I would assume is the heated windshield). Does that seem weird to anyone? All the posts I found said that the second pull out (super defrost) was standard but the heated mirrors were an option.

You have to be careful what you read. Things changed over the years, and some things differed from one market to the next. Often, people give advice based upon what their particular car happens to have, which may or may not relate to your car. It is always helpful to know what car you have and what market it was built for.

Also, you ought to look first in your oowner's manual, as the operation of the knob is most likely described there. If you don't have an owner's manual, you ought to try to find one.

Cheers,
Jeff

Nineball, I only know what my '84 Driver's Manual says and that is that when pulling the knob one click, the rear window relay is activated (left of engine) and the heated windshield and heated mirrors are activated. If the knob is then turned CLOCKWISE, the heated windshield is DE-ACTIVATED (along with the mirrors, I presume) in order to make more current available exclusively to the rear window defroster ("High" or "Max" defrost).

I was befuddled by the fact that the icon on my defrost knob looks centered/level when the knob is turned clockwise. I've got to rotate the defrost icon puck so it looks level/centered when the knob ISN'T turned clockwise (yes, I suffer with spells of SEVERE OCD).

But here's the capper: The manual says that the knob icon should only glow as a "warning" that the window is heated. Unfortunately, my knob icon glows as soon as the key is in the ignition position. Looks cool and all, but really shouldn't be lit until a window is heated.

When do y'all's defroster knob icons light up? Only when pulled/rotated or all the time with key in Pos. 2?

I'm about to dive into the nose of the Targa to see if I can locate the connection for my heated windshield now. I have the heated windshield (it delams over time making a nice, cloudy effect toward the lower corners : ( but I found the wire that's supposed to be powering it just dangling in under the cowl area connected to absolutely nothing. Damn I wish I could hook that up. My guess is a PO or PM yanked that wire plum out of the windshield. They'll be no hooking that back up without R&R'ing the (already cloudy) windshield. If we're gonna order some from Europe, gang, let me know. I might consider going in with y'all.

thanks for that info. my defrost and fog light up when the car is running and the lights are on then get brighter while in use:

In my '85, the switches are illuminated in the same way as in nineball's car. Lit when the lights are on, brighter when the switch is in the "on" position.

Your OCD can't be all that bad. You haven't resorted to rearranging the letters into the correct order: CDO... I suppose only those afflicted would understand.

My '87's fog switches also have a two level illumination depending on whether they are activated or not.

Lights except fog on:

And switch lit up brighter with fogs turned on:

More to the point of this thread, my defrost switch is just a push button - no pull, no turn. With that in mind, I suspect I have only one level of defrost power. My mirrors turn on with this switch, and I presume that if I had a heated W/S, it would also activate with this same switch.
