Question on heated windshield???

Was this an option or standard on my 83 911 SC.

I was messing with the defrost button the other day and it turns and pulls. I read the owners manual it said to pull it for the front windshield to be heated along with the outside mirrors and turn it for the rear defroster.

I was curious if this was an option or standard equipment. I've seen people post that their car has a "rare" front heated windshield. Is this it or is it something else.

The owners manual didn't indicate that it was an option like it does with the cruise control.

Any input?

It was an option. My 930 has it too and it is a godsend in places where it rains, like this here in Scotland:

George,

Does the winshield have the heater element grid laminated in?

Just because it has a knob that functions that way doesn't necessarily mean it has a heated windshield, I don't think.

Have you confirmed that it actually has a heated windshield?

ausdilecce 03-15-2005 11:10 AM

Rick,

Yes, the heater element is in between the two layers of glass. The windsheild is composed of 3 parts
glass (outside)
plastic membrane with heater element
glass (inside)

*IF* your defroster knob turns, you probably have the part of the wireloom that would connect to the front windshield heater element.

IIRC, the wires from the windsheild come out of the glass at the lower left hand corner and feed though a hole in the windsheild gasket and then though the metal windsheild surround.

The 'heated' windsheild is ~$1300, again IIRC. If you specify that to your glass shop, they could probably get it for your car. ( They did for my 83 sc coupe in New York )

It is a fantastic option ( I miss it now with my 87 targa )

kevjandon 03-15-2005 11:18 AM

What does "IIRC" mean?

Will I be able to see these wires to confirm they are are there?

Is it easer to look on the back side of the defrost knob to see if all the connections are in place?

You can't see the wire in the picture provided.

GeorgeK 03-15-2005 11:22 AM

On that picture you can see the wires. They are in fact invisible to anyone unless I point them to the observer. Very unconspicuous.

IIRC - If I Recall Correctly

ausdilecce: Sounds like a better option than the winshield antenna.

ausdilecce 03-15-2005 11:28 AM

Rick,

If you put a heated windsheild in, BE SURE to add glass coverage to your insurance policy.. ( I was glad *I* did )

On my MY '83, cert of auth. it is listed under Optional Equipment as "Heatable Windshield with Graduated Tint"

exactly what I was thinking. They all have a pull/twist knob. afaik

ausdilecce 03-15-2005 12:49 PM

The only way to *really* know if your car should have a heated windshield is to check the sticker under your trunk lid for the correct option code (443)..

Most coupes ( all? ) have the defrost knob that turns. But not all have the heated windsheild option. Targas and Cabs have a defrost button ( top of center console ) and so will not ( never ? ) have a heated windsheild.

There is surprisingly little info regarding heated windsheilds.. I am going on my own observations... so YMMV

D'STARGA 03-15-2005 07:47 PM

Never say never. My 82 targa does indeed have the heated windshield. And when I got it I made sure that my insurance has the glass coverage. I is not a cheap hunk of glass!.

ausdilecce 03-16-2005 03:10 AM

D'STARGA,

Learn something new every day !

How do you activate the heated windsheild without also activating the rear defrost ? Do you have a second defrost button or switch ? If so, where is it, what does it look like ( pic ? )

My targa has a button on the top of the center console for rear defrost ( push in on , push in again off )

Heatable Windshield

My '84 Carrera has a heatable windshield that I want to replace (sandblasted over the past 27 years). Does anyone know where I can get a new one? Local Porsche dealer says they can't get it.

javadog 10-15-2011 02:17 PM

Call Pelican and have them check to see if they can still get one. These two parts numbers still show up in the system:

911.541.011.21
930.541.011.02

Nah, the easiest way is to look at the glass. It's real obvious if you have it or not.

Prior to sometime in the spring of 1983, Porsche didn't put stickers under the hood of a 911, so lots of people can't simply look at the sticker. The heated windshield started long before that...

Do a search.

I posted the prices on a recent post.

NLA in the U.S., but available in Europe.
