picture sizing problems
 

So why when I try to upload a pic fiirst I get this:

"You may include an image in your BB post. NEW: It may be any size or dimension."


Awesome. However when I try uploading a pic I get:

"You attempted to upload a file totaling 1124161 bytes. This exceeds the maximum limit of 100000 bytes (100k). Please go back and select a smaller image."


Then I reduce the pic again and again until finally it takes and it ends up looking crappy. Is this how it is supposed to work?

In your photo editing program, set resolution to 72 dpi. and image dimension to about 500-600 pixels wide. Save in jpg format if not already. That should do it.

The DPI is at 72 and I did cut down the photo to that pixel count so it would take. It looks like crap. See attached pic... maybe because it is not a Porsche? :)

Is your software program dropping pixels or color info within the image? There should be menu choices for the amount of jpg compression (e.g. low, medium, high, highest quality). It looks like the current setting is set to LOW. Take a look.

I'm not familiar with all the photo editing programs out there (especially in Windoz), but they all have equivalent commands/capabilities such as the above.

I think the photo uploader must have got changed awhile back. I too have had to downsize my photos as of late also. I use Ifranview which another poster suggested in a previous post somewhere. It is free and pretty easy to open a picture then resize as half size, save then reopen.
It is fairly simple to figure out.

Another Pelican put me on to this freeware: http://www.irfanview.com/
A few clicks and a “save as” makes any image suitable for e-mail or posting.

I have my 3.2M camera set for just under 1M. That gives me 250+ images per chip. The scanner occasionally produces 4M+ files. All this I get down to under 100K with irfanview.

Most don’t like huge files unless it is for a specific purpose – like a wiring diagram. Under 100K works well with most dial-up connections and Pelican. It is best to send Pelican Forum an already sized image so we don't unnecessarily use Wayne's bandwidth.

Pelican KobaltBlau came over Saturday and ordered me DSL and has offered to get it all set up for me. Nothing like help from a kid who gets his MS in Computer Science at University of Colorado Boulder in May. Of course I plan some reciprocity in spades for a 911SC owner.

I use Ifranview also and used the exact procedure as stated here and the pic still ends up looking nasty... see above. The original is super clear and sharp. I've noticed that as I resize it is still looks good and crisp but just smaller on my computer. When it ends up on Pelican it doesn't look as good.

My procedure with Irfanview is:
File
Open
Find the large image I want and Open. For instance 2048x1536 = 1.38M jpg.
Image
Resize/resample
Best to fit desktop
OK
Save as (whatever) 573x430 =103K jpg

Done. It is almost always under 100K. Images look great for posting on Pelican.

BTW this is Pelican KobaltBlau last Saturday. A great learning experience for 911 pilots.

Here is the 1.38M image reduced to 103K by "best to fit desktop."
