LSD Swap/Install Help

I have a late 915 w/ a 7.3:1 w/ a limited slip and would like to change to a 8.3:1 as the gearing isnt quite right for my needs. I found a 915 for sale but it doesnt have the LSD. Does it make sense to swap the dif between the cars? IE. What is involved in the swap, special tools needed? Estimate for shop hours charged?

Tell me if I'm nuts, I'm not sold on the idea, just trying to figure out my best option.

Thanks!

Chris,

Yes you can make the change. Yes, it is a big deal setting the side bearing pre-load and the position of the ring & pinion. Yes, it takes all the special tools and some expert skill. No, you don’t want to make the change without going through all the effort.

If you don’t carry the LSD over, you will significantly change the driving characteristics of the 911.

It might be easier to simply re-gear your existing transmission.

Best,
Grady

Thanks for the quick reply. I obviously dont know much about transmissions, I appreciate the advice. Another option was to buy a different R&P and have that installed. I had hoped the LSD was a simpler process, sounds like I was wrong.

Thanks again!

take the 8:31 complete with the original pinion depth shims and side shims that came with it and install the whole works in your trans. if you want to use the posi unit, bolt the 8:31 ring gear to it along with the side shims that came with the 8:31 setup. do a white grease contact check when you're done. the cases are so close in tolerance that i would be surprised if the grease pattern was not right on. i've done many of these swaps with not one issue.
