32 degree vent temps with r134a???? yup....
 
Just had the Duckís AC refit with the new Rennaire serpentine evaporator and am very pleased with the results. Charged with r134a, we hit 32 degree vent temps on an 83 degree day. My ac is setup with stock condensers with a Procooler and this new evap. Seems to get more air volume though the vents as well. Next step is to finish installing a set of their new lightweight barrier hoses to replace my stock ones (ran out of time on this trip:(). Iím ready for the Dallas summer!!!!!

Nice. Where did you get the setup and how much did it run you? I'm thinking of upgrading my A/C.

Why the prop rod? Did you add anything heavier to the lid or is it just a worn gas shock? I've got a solution in case you're interested.

That's one thing I'm gonna miss on my '70. NO AC. In Texas, that's almost suicide. Luckily my 'other' car has the AC, and it WORKS!

Had a prop rod also, I got another new gas lift and it would sort of hold the lid up.
What I did, was get longer bolts, put one lift on the left side of the bracket, a nut between and the other lift on the right side of the bracket. Works great.

Now I have to convince Ron to do a road trip to Las Vegas to do my car, new hoses, procooler and evaporator.

Nice evaporator it appears to be a o-ring style vs. flare fitting,I am still struggling to get my flare fittings to seal.Nice setup you have there.These cars can have functional AC it just takes some work.

You're gonna need the AC before long... How's the beast?

You might want to try some of that blue gunk/sealer stuff that the AC guys use. I think Ron used it on flare fittings as well.

I thought it was really bad to have the lid propped up while running the AC? Something about the gas condensing to liquid and then blowing the system up or something.

Yup, the lid should be closed when running the ac so the engine fan will pull air through the condensor. What you can't see is the high volume fan sitting in front of the lid supplying air.

Congrats Mark...I was wondering which you felt was the most beneficial, the Procooler or the new evaporator? Summer here in Tulsa was just about as bad as Dallas so I'm looking for any ideas.

Yeah but Tulsa is cooler than Okc in the summer (believe it or not)

Hey Buck,
I'm not sure if it's and either/or deal. We were getting 40 degree temps with just the Procooler on Freeze 12. While it was cold air, there still wasn't enough volume and I really wanted to go 134a to standardize. I think the evaperator was another link in the chain to maximize efficiency. The new evaperator seems to flow more air into the cabin we were definately getting cold air.

That's great! I'm surprised it worked so well with the decklid up, since you aren't getting any airflow through the decklid condensor that way.


One of the most important upgrades we did to Jack Olsen's car to get the 37 degree vent temps on high fan speed, was to update the evaporator to the '86 and later unit. I'm very interested in that unit you've got there.

Mark, Great job!

I talked to RetroAir but they didn't want to sell individual parts only the total package. What did you pay for the evaporator? Also the hose that is being held up in the pict looks like a #6 vs the factory #8, am I correct?

I think the evaperator was $229. He has prices on his website at procooler.com. The new hoses are smaller OD, but the same ID as factory. They're more flexable and ~10 lbs light than stock as well. I ran out of time over the weekend and didn't get all the hoses installed yet, but plan to redo in a couple of weeks.

Looks nice! Remember my summers in Dallas and its not a pretty sight with a stock 911 A/C system! Phoenix is warmer but no humidity!
