Argghhhh I can't mate worth a ....

f***.

The restoration of my '73 911S targa is nearing an end so I was finally able to reinstall the engine last weekend. I reconnected the axles, hoses and wires, filled it with oil, everything except the clutch cable because I thought it was too long.

Warren, aka Early_S_Man, told me that the cable was fine, so last night I drove the 60 miles to my restorers shop and installed the clutch cable. The blasted thing won't move the clutch arm. Apparently I had mating issues and put the throw out arm in the wrong groove. I tried moving the arm with my foot, but it wouldn't budge. It looks like I have another engine drop ahead of me.

Is it possible to disconnect the engine from the transmission just enough to properly mate them together, or do I have to slide the engine completely off the studs holding the transmission in place? If the later is the case, I will pull them both out as a unit.

Thanks,

it will have to be moved away a considerable distance to swing the fork into the t/o bearing slot. enough so when you look down from the top, you have enough gap to slip a screwdriver through to move the fork.

I can mate just fine, but I don't get many chances to prove it.

My "perfect, by the letter" top-end rebuild went fine until I got the motor and trans back in and realized I had done the same thing. Rite of passage - congratulations

Well, just did this same thing on a friend's 2.7 / 915 last Saturday. He had it all back in the car and discovered that the clutch fork was flopping about loose.
Car still up on jackstands, but axles connected, mounts in, etc. We did the following:
Unhooked everything except the axles that is normal in engine/trans drop
Put a motorcycle jack under the engine, and a smaller transmission jack under the trans - using wood under the Heat Exchangers.
Loosened all mounts and started the engine down and back, lowering the trans as needed to follow engine.
When lowered as much as possible, seperated trans & engine, then rolled engine rearward.
Laying under car, one person jiggled fork into place, while other slowly rolled the engine rearward. It actually worked!
Wobbled engine back onto trans studs, started bolts, then nuts on studs, and reversed procedure to get everything back in car.
Elapsed time - two people - 4.5 hours, without really rushing. We'd be faster next time...

Been there, done that. Just pull out the fan assembly and the rear engine mounts. Drop the motor about 5 inches, loosen the 4 bolts securing engine to trans, then pull engine back until the clutch fork clears the bearing.

Have a buddy push the engine forward while you work the clutch lever from beneath, carefully watching to see it slip on the bearing.

The whole job should take about 2 hours.

I'm quite amazed that we only had one taker on this one. I thought about it but figured there'd be so many other replies like Superman's that I'd not be able to field anything original.

Maybe this'll help
