Question What is this part?

Can you guys tell me what is and does. It is on the passenger side of the engine compartment. It has two hoses attached to it on the front side of the car and a nipple on the rear side. Larger hose runs to intake. Smaller runs towrds front of car.

Charcol canister?

Takes gas vapors and keeps them from the atmosphere. Air is circulated thru it from the engine fan and the intake swallows that air. At least that's the principle on a '71.

So, mine is doing nothing I would guess. At this point, I'm guessing again, The small line is running up from the gas tank into it and the large runs to the intake to pull those fumes in. But, the nipple on the front that is hooked to nothing must have come from the fan or shroud. This makes the system null and void. Yes?
