Door jam rust - Body shop in Metro NY

Now that the snow is more or less over (crosses fingers), I'm planning on getting the rust in the door jam fixed.

Exploring the area inside the rust hole and underneath the car, I'm tempted to believe that it isn't too serious of a rust problem. Although common knowledge of "what you see is only 10%" makes me a bit anxious about ignoring it.

So, are there any recommendations regarding body shops in the metro NY area (heck anyone from PA to CT is fine for me).

Also, any words of advice from those that faced this problem?

A slightly outdated picture of the problem:

I've actually had mixed results (heard good things, had a bad experience) with Formula. Your experience may vary. Two Excellent shops, both of which I've had good experiences with, are James Auto Works in Sea Cliff Long Island and Deman Motorsports in Nyack. Both are admittedly a bit of a hike, but public transportation is easy enough to come by, and they're roughly an hour away.

Sorry to hear that , I've been using Mark for a couple of years and find the work top notch and the price fair and honest

Had the same problem. Ended up ordering a sill piece from Stoddard and had a local shop weld it in. Came out great!

Boomer, on the phone Mark was great - it was a mechanic that turned the experience south. Could have just been a bad day, but there are enough shops around that it didn't seem worth a second try to me.

Contacted Mark at Formula. I'll try to get the car to him this week for his opinion/estimate. I was planning on doing it today, but the darn snow is working against me.

Will also speak to some of the local weld shops. I'll post my findings soon.

Huey: How much did it wind up costing you?

Thanks!

Alan,

I'm going to be in the same boat as you i'm afraid. . .can you let us know the (rough) estimate, and post any pics of the job?

Also, I don't believe we've had you fellas to one of our NYC Pelicanhead drinking/pontificating sessions. . . which is clearly OUR BAD. . . what better way to fight the midwinter blues than with a bent elbow? Hmm. . .

Do you have to know the part number, or did you order the catalog?

I've found Restoration Design to have body parts at cheaper prices then elsewhere.

I've heard good things about the quality as well. Anyone else want to chime in?

The "package deals" look good, plus they are in Michigan - that's good for me.

John,

Your bad indeed.

Actually, I haven't been too active in the p-car scene due to the fact that I bought her just before winter set in, and haven't had much time to enjoy her yet. So I haven't met any fellow Pelicanheads yet, except by email.

Alan.....Restoration Design for your metal parts...I got everything from them when I de-rusted my '65 912. I shall look into a few shops in the area for you. Kurt, pjv911, has recommended a shop out on the Island, Triple G.....they have worked on his car and it looks great, give them a hollar.

Cramer...I missed the last get togethr, I do feel the need for some brew. Are you suggesting that it is time once again? You guys are all welcome in Brooklyn.

Mike. . . we all DO need to get together . . . I want to ask you everything you know about de-rusting an early 911. . .

It's not OFFICIAL yet. . . (PPI this week) but since you and Mike the Younger are old McSorley's pals, here's a sneak preview . . . it ain't pretty. . .

Anyway, if you're talking, I'm buying.

I'll PM Kurt for info about Triple-G. . .

Brooklyn,

I did order the Stoddard catalog and then visited the dealer in my travels to Cleveland. The owner of Stoddard is a Porsche nut and he stocks many original and repro body parts. I had about $ 600.00 dollars total into my repair. Will post pictures next time i sign on! Stoddard part # for drivers side is 502.041.04 and was $ 71.00.
