A couple more 73 specific questions...
 

I have been taking my doors panels apart and trying to replace the mirrors on my 73.5. I got a set of the chromed ones when I could not find replacement NOS black 73 ones. 2 issues:

- The mirror holes on the driver door are great but the existing passenger mirror was mounted further back with holes drilled thru the door skin, those hole don't match the new mirror, and are not the regular mirror mount holes. However if you used the regular holes, the passenger side mirror is too much forward to actually be of use by the driver - it's kinda hidden by the A pillar. Did the passenger mirror normally have a longer neck or something?

- When I removed my door panels I spied holes for speakers and power windows. No way those were there in 73, right ? Later doors, right ? This car is a true frankenstein, but I don't care, it runs well !

The mirrors were brushed aluminum finish in '73 ... to match the aluminum window trim. I have never seen an original passenger side mirror on a '73 ... but, they may have been an option. I have seen aluminum BMW mirrors fitted, but they aren't identical -- curved stalk instead of straight!

Though power windows were available in '73, there was no provision for door speakers! Your door does sound like a trtansplant ...

Hmm.. Warren, what do you think of these doors then? They were removed from a 72, but don't know if they were original.

One option for mirrors is the 74-75 brushed aluminum ones, they look the same, but are larger(actually usable) and came in a pass. and drivers side.

Did Porsche use the round mirror in 1973 for RHD cars, or was there a rectangle one made for those markets?

In 1973, power windows were common. All sorts of stereos were added by dealers and stereo shops. The doors did have speaker holes in those years. The one thing that distinguished a 1972 door from a 1973 was a reinforcement bar inside the door, which was added to pass federal side-impact legislation.

I used to have a factory 73 driver's side mirror and an aftermarket repro on the passenger side. This wasn't uncommon before the supply of passenger side repro's dried up. I switched to the 74-75 mirrors, though, because the 73 mirrors are not big enough to be useful, in my opinion -- especially the one on the passenger side.

And here I was - again - assuming that something on the car was stock ! My 73.5 has square black rectangular mirrors that looked very much like 80s mirror except all black and were in the same theme as the huge black bumperettes... My bad ! Thanks guys, They're off and I've put the brushed aluminum ones on the car, except that the passenger one is not all that useful due to the positioning ;-)

The mirrors aren't supposed to be symmetrical. If you do a search, you'll find the specific locations for each side.

Looks better, though.

That is correct, round mirrors for RHD cars. There were no rectangular passenger side mirrors for the '73.

If it makes you feel any better my RS had the same kind of aftermarket mirrors on both sides when I bought it. I decided to take off the passenger mirror and patch up the holes and found a nice used '72-73 drivers side mirror. The Porsche replacement ones sold now are actually bigger than the original ones FWIW.

I'll live with the holes for now... Either way the plastic mirror was useless - it folded at speed - and if I took it out I'd have holes, and the holes I punched erroneously for my shiny new mirror were actually just thru one layer of paint so they were there before. Were those mirror holes supposed to be solid/plugged on that side?

My objectives are to leave the body alone (no RS clone - though I like those too and have dreams about Jack's car) but I like the narrow body lines, I'll just do a lot of reversible interior upgrades because my interior is rough...

I'm going for an RS "panels and carpet" look in black/grey, sparco torinos when I get the correct base and seat belt mount, possibly repad the dash in alcantara (trying a dash cap first) and also the headliner in grey alcantara, 997 style... The car has all the S bits already so after some suspension tuneup it'll be OK, right now it's...ahh... let's call it darty under braking ? ;-)

Ian, I still got that SC tucked away - sold it to a friend and I got first dibs on it when he sells it. It's got 175K miles now !
