Saturday I had trouble getting my fan housing back in after an alternator rebuild. I used a screw driver to pry against the front pulley to push the fan housing in place. And of course bent the pulley slightly. Don't do that. I tried tapping the pulley lip back in place/straight with some success. But it's still somewhat bent and the belt vibrates on the left side. I don't remember the belt vibrating before.
Problem? Should I replace the front pulley? The engine is out of the car with some tranny work right now. Thanks, pat 84 targa |

I would, last thing you need is the belt popping off or excess wear from the mis alignment.

You probably don't remember the belt vibrating in the past because you probably were not checking it that closely because you had no need to. Now you are a bit more paranoid and everything looks suspicious. If all you did was bend the lip a bit don't worry about it. The belt rides quite a bit further down in the pulley. Most belts vibrate a bit on one side or another. Just make sure you have it tensioned properly. On the other hand, used pulleys are cheap.

A vibrating pulley and belt could lead to premature failure of the bearings in the alternator. Also, if the belt isn't running "true" in the pulley, that could cause the belt to wear out prematurely as well. I'd replace the pulley....

The engine was out today anyway but my wrench didn't think the uneven lip was worth taking the sheet metal off. So I guess it's more uneven than bent. I'm not sure what an engine drop alone would cost. I bet it's 2 hours.
Thanks for the input, pat 84targa
