Gents,

Forgive me. This is not my first forum, but it is my first post and I have some no0b questions despite several searches I have run on this forum. I have not found the answers I desire.

I just purchased an '87 911 Carrerra with 187,000 miles. (pictures are on my blog: http://pordched.blogspot.com/ )

It is more of a project than I wanted. Oh well. Here is my questions:

I have the 101 projects book but it only names good tranny oils up too '86 any recommendations for the G50 tranny?

Also any recommendations for the engine oil? It has a leak so I am looking for a heavier weight.

I am already replacing the O2 sensor...any other good maintenance advice?

A search on "G50 mobil" will give you plenty of reading material.

Other maintenance? Thats a long list! Lots of ways to spend your $... oil change, valve adjustment, plugs, air filter, fuel filter, wheel bearing regrease, suspension bushings, shocks, fuel lines, brake lines... et cetera.

maybe do a search on the dme chip..lots of problems when this fails..many keep a spare around.

1) Two words: Baseline it.
BTW: DME chips don't fail as much as the relays fail.

Nice detail work. You can come and do mine when your finished.


My .02 -- get the car sorted. Prioritize the problems. You made a huge list on your blog. Very few matter when it comes to rolling the car down the street. Just work on those until you can pay for something else. My car is older with similar mileage and runs like the clappers. After the tail gets painted this week it should look the dog's bits too.

Where are you stationed?

Well said. You should listen to that and all of the above. You should have compression and leak down test done so you know what you got. (small price to pay for those.)

I'm guessing there was no PPI? Are there records of any major work, like top end rebuild or anything? Last clutch?
wrt: "brake pad light on". You very well may need brake pads asap. And have rotors looked at.
As you might guess, I really like Carreras. Hope it all works out for you. They sure are fun when sorted out.

p.s.
Castrol 20-50 is fairly thick and very popular for what you describe.

Yep, that is the plan. The only reason I have not had it compression tested or had a leak down is because I do not have plates for it. I am going to run that and test a few other things. Of course, the little bit I drove it...it had plenty of power, and once it warms up it idles fine. The owner gavve me all teh receipts that he had. He never had to do anyting major...even the top end checked out 20,000 miles ago. So I think I can pu to off a rebuild for the time being. Although it has not been rebuilt.

Right now I am planning on changing plugs and wires, brake pads, all fluids, and the O2 sensor. Once that is done I will see what is next. Honestly, I want to drop the engins so I get an idea of the amount of rust underneath the skin. (one receipt said the brackets for the rear sway bar rusted off http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat5.gif )

As far as engine oil...I was looking more for a brand. I was not very clear in my question...any special kind of Castrol oil? I did not think to do a search on the tranny. In the 101 Projects book he recommends Swepco for the 915, but does not recommend anything for the G50. I will look it up thanks.

@ Brother: Ft. Knox for a few more months. The great thing about the Army is Autocraft shops. You rent a bay ($1.25/hr) and the place has all the tools you should need and mechanics on staff to assist you.

I like the Swepco in the G50 gear box, Castrol 20W50 in the sump; change the brake fluid if you have no record of its last change since that is really a time not miles dependent fluid; O2 sensor is a no brainer; valve adjustment would be a good start along with the plugs and wires. A brand new fan belt would be $6 well spent. Buy a spare while you are at it. I would buy a fuel relay, DME relay and some spare fuses while you are shopping at our host's site. Take that targa top off and let 'er rip!

Cool. I'm Air Force. We got the same deal except they all thought it would be better if they were closed on Sundays now so it is pretty hard to finish an engine drop during their business hours.

The `87 has just one relay for fuel and DME. They can go out suddenly so keeping a spare in the glovebox is a good idea. Besides plugs and wires, do a cap and rotor, fuel filter, air filter. Also brake fluid flush (don't forget to flush the clutch) and G50 oil (Redline 75-90 or Valvoline Synthpower 75-90). As far as engine oil is concerned, any quality dino will be good. I personally prefer Valvoline. Unless you are in the frozen north, I suggest 20-50. Do a search on oil-there's a ton of info. Many folks will tell you that that they have leakage problems when they switch to synth oil like Mobil 1 but you can decide if you want to take the risk.
