Permatune

Was this standard on an 83 SC?

Mine has one and I have no records that indicate that it was ever replaced.

The Bosch unit was standard, the Perma (insert your word here) is a bolt on replacement. If it works, I'd keep it and start a small fund to replace it down the line. Eventually you will need a new unit (this could be years and years down the line, don't get scared!!!!) and a new coil. Drive and enjoy!!

Now this is interesting.

My SC has 44K original miles. I have documentation back to 1990 when the second owner bought it. Nothing about a Permatune replacement.

No Documentation from 83 to 90 however the maint. book is stamped from the dealer at all the required service intervals.

I wonder who replaced it and why?

Hummmmm.

It's easy enough to blow up. Just hook up a dwell meter wrong and out goes the coil and the CD. I'm with the others, start a fund to by at the least a used 6 pin Bosch unit as a back up. Or you could just use the Permacrap as a paperweight...like me.

My 81 has one as well that was installed by the PO, and supposedly it is an upgrade from the stock unit, but most one on the board seem not to like them.

Nobody wants to admit to it.
The one in my car saw a grand total of 5 years and 5000 miles before failing. (PO didn't drive it much). I may send it in to see if they'll repair it.

I believe running a search here, you'll find the guys divided between the factory CD unit and MSD. Early_S_man is our electrics/ignition guy here. He's better than good on this stuff. MUCH better than good. If the factory CD unit is good enough for him, it's good enough for me...

The Great Melmac says: Did I correctly diagnose the issue to the PermaTune?

BTW, having a vehicle suddenly lose ALL power instantly at random moments is not just interesting, it can be down right dangerous. My original Bosch has never done that. There is no added performance with the Permatune as far as I could tell.
