Oil level sender dead or....
Just installed a Mocal oil cooler, new lines, thermostat etc. During the install I drained all the oil & installed a new filter, sump gaskets, etc. filled it back up with 9+ quarts of oil. Now my oil gauge reads 5 quarts or less, sometimes shoots up to 7-8 quarts. Checked & cleaned the connections, they seem OK. Is the sender on it's way out?

Dipstick (one in the car) reads between min & max @ 180 degrees, idling around 900rpm. Oil gauge reads 5 or less quarts when cold. When it's hot 180 - 210 the needle jumps from 5 to 8+. Doesn't read consistently. Before the cooler installed it work fine. What did I do wrong. Is it possible to install the thermostat backwards?

jvirn,
Dipstick or oil level gauge readings are meaningless when the oil is cold! If the conditions under which you are seeing the varied 5 - 8+ readings are identical to when you are manually taking a reading with the dipstick, i.e., level ground, oil warmed up to 180°F, and idling at 900 rpm ... then the sender moving contact/spring is probably weak or broken, and only making intermittent contact with the wirewound resistor element! If you are only describing the way the needle moves around during normal driving ... then stop watching the gauge except when under the circumstances that you would take a normal dipstick reading!!!
