source for ceramic fuses?
 

Where can I get original type fuses for my car? (see sig) Just got her, and the fuse blocks will probably have to be rebuilt (dismantled and cleaned). Someone wedged some glass tube type fuses in a couple places, but they are too long.

Unless there's some other solution, I need some original style fuses.

I got mine at the local auto parts. They are standard on german cars

I found assortment packs at a local stop-n-rob, $1.99 a pack, had 6 or 8 in it, I think they were 5, 8, 10, 15, 20, 25amps, if memory serves correctly. The lowest price I have seen for these hard to find fuses.

Ahh... maybe I just need to open my eyes when I'm at the store. I picked up a package of the glass type fuses, but they were even longer than the ones that were wedged in a few places, and wouldn't fit at all.

You can buy them right here...except for the 5W, which seems to be NLA. Even those can be replaced though. My local NAPA store sells glass tube fuses with the same end shape and length as our original ceramics, and those are available in 5W...

yup, pelican sells them. I think I read somewhere that the 5w ones can be replaced with the 8w ones, but don't do it unless Warren, Grady, or John W says it's ok. ;)

If you have a BMW motorcyle dealer close by, you might want to check with them. All of the old airhead style motorcyle uses ceramic fuses.

I think the bigger challenge would be finding an auto parts store that *doesn't* have these fuses! :D

DO NOT USE AN 8 AMP FUSE IN PLACE OF A 5 AMP FUSE!! An 8 amp fuse doesn't blow until the power has reached 250% more than what a 5 amp fuse will pass! Doing this could melt the circuit and do significant damage to the adjacent wiring in the harness. The yellow 5 amp fuses are PN 90017300690 and are available special order through Pelican for $1.00 each. The 5 amp yellow fuses are becoming difficult to find in auto parts stores. Type in the part number in the "Search Pelican Parts" box. Jim

5 amp fuses are yellow
8 amp fuses are white
16 amp fuses are red
25 amp fuses are blue

I'm not sure where the 250% comes from....but even a simple 8/5 ratio indicates ( at least) a 60% oversize condition.

Ah but the problem is finding the 5amp fuses. PP doesn't seem to have them in stock and I haven't found them anywhere else.

Read the thread; PP can get 5 amp fuses from Porsche. I ordered them (yellow 5 amp fuses) from Pelican twice in the last year. Power and hence heat goes as current squared: 5 squared (5 times 5) is 25, 8 squared is 64; 64 divided by 25 is 2.56. That's 2.56 (or 256% ) times as much power or heat. Jim

I have just finished replacing my beat to crap 356 fuse holder with a modern box....uses the modern double spade fuses and the 5a fuse is available.

I have an extra box if anyone is interested. My 914 needed an interior wiring loom so I bought the "Painless Loom"....
