Question "Airbox Mod" for 3.2L

Hello,
I would like to try the "airbox mod" as I have easy access to an airbox cover. (I realize there is no performance gain here at all, just audible gain)

Considering that the Porsche engineers put that horn on I'm thinking that it's there to draw air from the rear of the engine compartment and close to the rear grill.

If I drill these big holes in the cover will the air taken in be any "less fresh" than if drawn in through the horn?

I'm thinking "no" as the engine must consume air at a huge rate and could empty the engine compartment in seconds. (hence drawing in much fresh air continuously).

Any thoughts?

They may have shaped it that way to help keep water out? My engine compartment is always very cold inside, I think the key is to make sure your engine tin is sealed real good.

I DID THE SAME THING TO MY 3.2 AND THERE IS NO HP GAIN, BUT IT DOES SOUND GOOD UNDER FULL THROTTLE. I PUT JUST 3 LARGE HOLES IN MY BOX INSTEAD OF THE SMALL ONES. OH WELL, IT WORKS AND I DONT THINK ANY WATER WILL GET IN THERE TO AFFECT IT ANYTIME SOON.

Your fan will pull enough air back there to keep things cool all around. Helps the car to sound good. Here's mine:

Nice.
I started an exhaust thread a while back and that's where I found out about the airbox mod.

Another user suggested cutting off the horn entirely.
I suppose that once you open up the face of the cover the horn is no longer required?

Or you could just cut the whole top off. Leave yourself a rim around the box that will hold the air filter in when clipped on. You'll also give yourself much more space in that rear corner of the compartment.

Would it be ridgid enough to hold the filter in place?

I suppose that when driving this would not be an issue as it would be sucked tightly into place.

Or cut like this:

Note: Not my pic, but I cut a spare one this way. The sound at WOT is deeper & 'honkier' . Not sure if I like it yet.

So it seems that the type & size of holes will affect the overall sound?

Perhaps a large number of smaller holes has a 'nicer' sound ....? (of course this is all about personal preference)

Could you post or PM the site?

I'd like to compare prices. I'm paying $30 CDN for the airbox cover.

It also looks like the cover in the photo is made of fibre glass. Nice and ridgid compared to the plastic modified cover.

Thanks,

Looks like Carbon fiber to me. Why would you need more rigidity? The filter basically comes up to the wall of the cover.

FWIW, the "frame" only version may be reffered to as the "cup car" airbox cover....at least from what Wil has said in the past.

The frame mod is the way to go - 5 minutes on a table saw and some fileing on the edges to clean things up and you have a professional looking air box lid that has no issues holding the filter in - the frame itself without the center is very rigid.

Very simliar to the carbon fiber look-a-like do-dad that Fabby sells minus the $175.

The full throttle acceleration in 2nd and 3rd is very audible - sounds very nice.

Are there cold air intakes that are factory for the 3.2 engine?

I think the $30 cover and slice-off-top sounds good to me!

Just because I'd think that'd be the case without all of the holes. I'm convinced it's a non-issue now.
