Paint Repair Expert Needed
I touched up some misc. items with some gloss black lacquer I bought locally. The color match is great, however, I'm told that any solvent will remove the paint. Is that true? Can I clear coat or something to prevent it from happening?

I can't figure what you used?
Lacquer's nice days are over. The tree huggers castrated it about 25yrs ago. It's not really worth the time anymore. Also real auto shop lacquer thinner is a mean mother.. meaning that could be a good test. If it survives that then I'd relax till it gets beat.

Lacquer is the best/easiest paint for "blending" purposes. A good idea to keep solvent off any paint - protect the lacquer with wax.

CAn just says Instant Drying Lacquer. I used on a few trip pieces. I was able to wet snad and busff out to a perfect finish. I guess I'll just load up the wax.

In reality laquer was and is a poor quality automotive finish for durability and protection, in the old days cars painted with laquer had serious rust issues, look at any old car with laquer and you will see rust bubbles under tha paint or crazing and cracking in the finish.
Laquer is porous, it allows water through it to the cars metal which was why waxing was so important years ago it protected the metal and conditioned the paint, if you really wanted to you could still get a laquer paint job today but don't expect it to look good 2 years later as it will begin to have problems. The best finishes are made today, 2 stage base and clear coat, it's much easier to blend and touch up than laquer or enamel ever was, they also have flex additives to make the paint more chip resistant. So for your question wax is all I would use to protect laquer, any solvents will dissolve or soften the laquer. |
