Oil Drain Plug Seal, replace everytime??
Do you have to replace the seals on the drain plugs at every oil change? They are cheap but I can't find a store by me that carries them.
|
I do it, but just for peace of mind.
Other cars I have owned were not so lucky, but I never had a problem either. For the 911, I ordered a few of them from Pelican and keep them on hand for the changes. -Chris |
You don't "have" to each time...but you'll know if you exceeded the limit when it leaks ! ... :)
Get a Fumoto valve and forget about it altogether..... Wil |

I called local parts stores and they don't care them, i.e. pep boys, autozone. My next step is to order a few from here and wait while looking into the valve someone else mentioned.

correction they don't carry them nor did they really CARE about a cheap seal. The Pep Boys website was horrible for even trying to find them.

Lambert,
You may try a local shop or even the dealer. My local wrench sold me the first one from his stock. From then on, I just stock them myself from Pelican..... -Chris |
You don't have to. Think about it. It is just a cheap piece of aluminum. No special machine work done on it. No high tolerance to worry about. If you take off the seal and it looks ok, it will work just fine. If it is cracked or gouged I would be looking at the mating surfaces on the plug/oil tank/engine to see what has happened.

Order 20 of 'em and put up on a nail in your garage wall...
It is wise to replace them each time or two. |
They're only 35 cents each, so do it every time. Next time you order something from Pelican, add 10 of them to your order.

Come on....replace the rings and forget about it....
If worried about the price...Go to a local independent shop and get a hand full for a few bucks.... |
There's a gasket and crush washer on the oil screen for my aircraft. The gasket and washer don't have to be replaced every time I open the oil screen, but for a few bucks I do it anyway just for peace of mind. I think the same philosophy would serve us well for the Porsche. Take the advice to buy a bunch and keep them on hand.
