911 Help

I'm selling my harley and entering into all of your worlds of Porsche. I'm looking for a 1980's model 911. I don't have much money to spend and want to get bang for the buck. I would like to stay around 10,000 if possible. I have cruised all over the internet and Have seen prices all over the place. You guys seem honestly blunt which who i need to talk to. So here are my questions.

How many miles are to many miles without a rebuild top end?
After how many should a top end be done?
How much does it cost to have some one do a top end?
How many miles are just to many miles?
What is the value difference if the car has a salvaged title?
Would it be impossible to resell a salvaged car?
What are some things to look out for?
What is PPI?
I'm sure Porsche so down as the age will an 80's model toss me back in the seat?
What year is the best year?
I really like the 1980 with the whale tale how is that year?
I know I will need to but some money into the car over time and
I'm not worried as long as it's not another 10,000. I'm not expecting to make money or collect the car I want to drive her and enjoy her without thinking oh man that's gonna cost me everytime I drive her.
They say it's better to sale and spend more from the begining but I don't have more so forget that Idea.
I live in New Jersey so if anyone knows of a good deal let me know.
Thanks for the time and help

After how many should a top end be done? Base the decision on oil consumption and compression/leakdown.

How much does it cost to have some one do a top end? $2-3K to have someone do it for you.

How many miles are just to many miles? It depends on how the car has been treated.

What is the value difference if the car has a salvaged title? It's worth less. How much less depends on the car.

Would it be impossible to resell a salvaged car? More difficult than non-salvage. If you are concerned about resale, then you should just stay away from salvage vehicles.

What are some things to look out for? Pelican sells a good book that addresses this.

What is PPI? A pre-purchase inspection.

I'm sure Porsche so down as the age will an 80's model toss me back in the seat? 78-83 911SC's have a strong following. Use the search function on this forum.

What year is the best year? Subjective. Use Search.

I really like the 1980 with the whale tale how is that year? See above.

Porsche automobiles are not inexpensive to repair, especially if you take them to a mechanic. If you are going to take to a wrench for every repair, budget $2-3K per year to maintain it. If you work on it yourself, it will be considerably less. Look at the Pelican parts catalog. See what a tune-up kit costs, and compare that to a Chevy. That should give you an idea.

If you use the search function of the BBS, you will find much more detailed answers. It is really great and you can learn a lot about what you are getting into.

Good luck.

Being nice...

>How many miles are to many miles without a rebuild top end?

Depends on model, maintenance, luck... I know of SCs with 250K+ without any work, and owned an SC that had 175K and was perfect too... A 2.7 with thermal reactors might not make 50K though !! You need to be more specific as to model years in your questions.

>After how many should a top end be done?

When you consume too much oil or it smokes a lot

>How much does it cost to have some one do a top end?

$3000, let's say, maybe more these days...

>How many miles are just to many miles?

No such thing, I prefer a well maintained 150K miles 911 to a dry-rot 25K miles car ! Plus you'll pay less...

>What is the value difference if the car has a salvaged title?

It's worth nothing except as a race car, hard to resell, damn impossible to insure...

>Would it be impossible to resell a salvaged car?

Very hard, see above.

>What are some things to look out for?

That, you need to use the search for, and specify a model year... Your question is too vague. Different years have different issues.. In general, rust, oil leaks, oil consumption, gearbox operation...

>What is PPI?

PRe purchase inspection. Don't do one and regret it later...

>I'm sure Porsche so down as the age will an 80's model toss me back in the seat?

What language is this exactly ? If I understand it right, not likely for your $$$, unless you find an early turbo. They're all fast cars but not "toss you in your seat" type...

>What year is the best year?

For what usage? For what budget?

>I really like the 1980 with the whale tale how is that year?

Any 80s car can get a whale tail... It's an option...

> know I will need to but some money into the car over time and

Safe rule: take your budget $$$, subtract $2000, keep those for repairs...

Phew, I should have said "use the search" too ;-) Have I just been trolled ?
