Big black, especially in RSR guise is amazing Ted, would love to see it with those 15s mounted, I think there is one shot but you can't see them too well. Great work!

SWEET, thanks for posting.. I'm sending my Turbo "S" wheels out to Harvey to be restored. BTW, they are Fuchs..

Very Nice Byron, real 11s are out of my budget, besides I could not find any factory 15x14 inch rear Fuchs. ;)
Harvey is the best.
He has some great stories too!

Polished and Painted

I used the tech write up on how to refinish them.

It took about 4 hrs per wheel, but they turned out almost perfect.
Very happy!

Great job on the step by step write up on the forum.

On near all these fine refinnish job's Ive noticed that the stem metal support thingy has been removed. Is this common to do this? IF so, how complicated is it to remove? doesnt appear to be welded on to me. Planning to do mine soon and would like to know.

They are just stuck on with a tape.

and if you don't replace them, you should get metal/stiff valve stems.
These do not bend and tear off at high speeds.
I have flush mounted valve stems, looks a lot cleaner.

Thanks guys. Was looking at one yesterday and thought I Noticed what might be a very thin 3m type of tape. No way to do a proper polish with them there. Probably leave off and go back with lowest profile stem I can get, chrome covered at that.

McLovin 02-13-2010 09:38 AM

are those stock fuchs wheel centers?

I'm amazed they are strong enough to carry that big of a wheel and tire, esp. on a race car.

good point, even the factory 9s and 11s can crack from the stress of hot sticky slicks at the track.
If you drive sanely on the street they should be fine with frequent inspections.

According to Harvey...
The 15x11 and 14s welded Fuchs were common on lower budget race teams in 74/75.
In 74 the less funded RSR teams could not afford 917 rims and knock offs so they welded and widened their 9s and 11s into 11s and 14s.
Then painted the barrels gray to match the anodized finish.

Ted used to direct airplanes off and onto the ground, thus his preference for large tires. :)

I went from a black and polished look to a Guards Red and dull look via the "scotch brite" method. Total cost less than $30.00 :)
