rear height adjust question

Can you access the rear torsion bar splines and index them without loosening the camber and toe bolts?

Hmm... don't see how. You're going to have to remove them from the trailing arm, 4 bolts. 2 connects it to the trailing arm and the other 2 are the toe and camber.

Just be sure to scibe the "U" that the spring plate makes on the trailing arm, and it shouldn't be too bad getting it back just about where they were.

Also, when I remove my eccentric bolts for the camber and toe, I put a mark on the outside of the bolt pointing toward the "fat" part of the eccentric bolt and then mark the spring plate so that I can put everything back together the way it was.

Curious, what does your Bruce Anderson book say?

In order to get to the rear t-bars to reindex, you need to take off the cover plate (4-bolts) and remove the 2-bolts that connect the spring plate to the trailing arm. Technically, you would not need to loosen the toe & camber adj. bolts. If your primary goal is to make a height adjustment and not affect your alignment, it's not really possible. Adjusting the height in and of itself, affects your alignment. Also, not loosening the toe & camber adj. bolts makes it MUCH more difficult to remove the spring plate from the trailing arm, and to reinstall it for that matter.

Maybe you're doing something different and I misread your post. . .

Bob,
Good point--finally found Anderson's book--it was in the aux library next to the seat of ease....................
Chapter 6 has lots on component upgrades and their effect on the car's handling, but does not mention anything re: adjustment of the steering wheel.

Tom,
No, you've got it--do you think less than 1" rise in height will be significant re: mis-alignment?

1" will change the alignment. Keep in mind, these cars can be finely tuned. To not optimize all of the settings when changing ride height degrades the car's handling. Not the time to shortcut, IMO.

I agree w/Ed. 1" is actually quite a bit - even 3/4" is a lot. It's worth it to maximize your car's handling and tire wear to have the alignment properly set up. It does make a noticeable difference.

Also - does your car have adjustable spring plates? If it does, you may be able to lower it to your desired specs (or dang close) by using the height adjustment. If you're shooting for 3/4" lower and the adjustable spring plates get you 5/8" - that may be "good enough" and save you the trouble of pulling the entire suspension apart etc... Alignment issues would still apply.
