A roll bar isn't required nor will it be. But I do have one in my car.

You leave the pavement here and a roll bar isn't gonna help much. 3000 feet is a lonnnnngggggg ways to roll. Cars come apart in that kind of scenario roll bar or not.

We'll do a little show and tell of the wrecks littering the hill side before we get started. Should be sobering for those involved.

Drive sane...and drive smart is the motto.

When the Rally rolls around, yes they will all be race car "safe". But part of the idea was to give everyone with the desire and some common sense the chance to drive these amazing roads.

This road was built in 1915 and was used as the main north- south highway in Idaho until 1975. In those 60 years thousands had driven the road with few accidents outside of human error or mechnical failures.

No reason we can't drive and enjoy the same road with no accidents caused by either.

No one SANE ...and I mean, no one would drive this road at 10/10ths.

There is a reason the professional hill climbs of Europe are considered the most dangerous races in the world.

I prefer an adventure for all involved instead of a death wish.

I mean 10/10ths of your car or of your skill.

This picture is from one of the switch back corners half way up. Note that there is no guard rail. You miss this corner going up hill and it is a full half mile of expert's ski slope (read very steep) with nothing but cheat grass (and I do mean nothing) to stop you from hitting the small creek in the canyon below.

There are at least a dozen corners that would put you in the same situation or worse in the 8.5 miles of this road. The other 50 or so corners you just might live through if you drive off them very slowly and get out of the car quickly.

My plan is to keep the 4 wheels on the road and a smile on my face.

This is great. I didnt know that there were roads this great in America. Unfortunately according to Mapquest it is a 37 hr drive one way so I dont think that I can make it this time. But there must be hidden jewels like this scattered throughout America. Is there a good compilation of driver's roads listings anywhere (not like "scenic roads")? You guys are going to have so much fun.

That's the old Whitebird Grade. Fun stuff. Not for the faint of heart.

GeorgeK, you can always fly into Seattle and stay with us...and drive my car

Not like you need to drive another mountain pass but the locals here are friendly and the seafood is good!

Afterall it was your original pictures in the Alps that started me on this quest.

Dane,

Do I read "..when the Rally rolls around, yes they will all be race car safe..." to mean that there will be no 'street' class cars, (ie. no cage etc...) allowed on the courses?

The Rally will be a week long event. All cars and their drivers will have to be up to professional standards to be involved. There will be several classes including "street" cars. What that specifically requires at this point is undecided.

I'd like to just get through first two weekends before worrying about the week long events.

The Hill Climb weekends will always have an amateur event that is untimed.
