Throw Out Fork Help
 

Is there a trick to making sure the throw out fork is aligned properly whern the engine is mated back to the trans? I am puting it together right now and I am having difficulty with it.

if you swing the fork fwd as eng mates with trany ,you can sort of see the engagement

That is right, swing it forward, and slowly mate the tranny with the engine. At the top of the tranny there is an open port that you can look inside and even move the fork manually to make sure it engages with the TO bearing.

If you take the starter off, you can use that opening to manipulate the fork somewhat. Worked like a champ for me.

I had trouble with that a few weeks back.
I used the lever on the bottom of the shaft on which the fork sits to wiggle the fork into place as a buddy was moving the engine back and forth. The way to know if the fork is on, is to move the engine back and forth a little and if you see the shaft turn in both directions your fork is on.

I could not see anything through either the starter hole or the top of the housing hole. I used a dental mirror and that did not help, so i just felt it out. Took about 15 minutes.

Yep, it's been about a year since I did this myself and as far as I recall, you don;t really get a good visual. You CAN, however get a good feel by going through the starter hole. I believe I did something like propping the tranny on my leg and steadying it with my right arm wrapped over the top of it. With my fingers through the starter hole I was able to manipulate the fork just enough to get it to go on. Took a bit of wrestling, but it worked.

The real key was to have the tines of the fork pointing towards the engine and guiding them into place as you slide the tranny on.

Have the fork at about a 45 degree angle and it should seat in the throwout bearing as you mate the engine with the transmission.

yep....you will be able to feel the fork engage and the arm will move as you push the tranny up to the engine. Odd to do the first time, but after that you will be able to get it very easy like a pro. :)

Quicktip-

After you bolt the engine up to the car, the first thing you will want to connect is the clutch cable to check for proper operation.

It sucks to have the engine fully ready to go, only to find out you miss installed the throw out fork. Ask me how I know.
