Engine Install Insanity
 

I am having a teriible time getting my engine to mate with my transmission. I have tried everything but romantic music.

I get the two bottom studs about half way into the trans case and the thud, it just stops. What am I not doing?

I had the same problem; I fought with it for about an hour before removing the transmission from the car. I was easily able to mate the two once the transmission was out.

BTW, did you use the clutch centering tool to the clutch disk spline?

I used the tool...this sucks, I am getting quite frustrated

You need to make sure your TO bearing fork mates properly with the TO bearing. Look into the transmisison bell housing from the top using a flashlight and a mirror - the fork needs to be mated inside the TO bearing groove.

Pull the starter. Believe me, just do it.

When it is out, you will be able to easily look in the hole (with a mirror and flashlight) and see what has to happen.
Make sure you put the starter back in before you lift the engine and tranny all the way back up into place.

EDIT: oops, just read the other thread and saw that everyone with a computer had already posted this advice. Guess it must be reasonable ;)

Also,stick the tranny in gear and grab both flanges. turn them both the same way just a little bit(most of the postings say also,pull off the starter,and make sure the fork is in right) if that does not work... recheck to make sure that the disc is centered...

I got the only one I saw on this site...the plastic one, I did not realize there was another...

I've never had a problem with the plastic centering tools I have. Perhaps there are different flavors?
