New Paint - Day 1 - Stipping Body

Well, it's here - the last week of March. I'm taking the week off and stripping and painting my 1970 911E.

In the last week or so I've stripped the fenders and sanded the fiberglass bumpers and ducktail. Today, I'll tackle the initial stripping of the body with aircraft stripper (many layers of old paint)

As a sort of motivator, I'll post a brief daily update with a few pics for reference.

Wish me luck,
Andrew M

I'm going to have my car repainted sometime this year. I am thinking about MAYBE doing some of the prep work myself to save a little if possible. I'll definitely be watching this thread. Good luck.

Before and Day Summary

OK here are a few before pics -
When I bought it, I knew I would have to do some work on the paint - A tire had fallen on the hood and it had rolled off some jack stands and damaged the rear RS flair. Apart from that, It was originally Irish Green, repainted Ivory and then White.

Looks OK at 10 Ft

Doors, Fenders, Hood and Trunk Lid off + Glass Out (done in the last couple days)

Stripper starting to work on Rear Quarter

Roof with stripper

Roof Done

And thats about it so far. I'm going for a long day tomorrow - Hopefully most of the paint will be off.

Regards,
Andrew M

Plastic (like visqueen) over the stripper helps it work faster. Less work for you.

Actually, I bought some 1 mil plastic sheeting that I'll use tomorrow - hopefully it keeps the vapours at a more reasonable level!

yahoo!! go for it.

What color are you going to paint?

Irish green is one of my alltime favorites. it may actually be my favorite in the 69'-73' bracket. Very classy.

I wasn't going to comment, but I have to say I LOVE the look of bare Porsche steel. If you're going to paint it, then that's the way you have to go. Looks easy!

For patient observers: bare steel looks mean, but for paint it is WAY clean. No point in filling.

Strip. Strip. Strip.

I love that car. Keep taking photos. For your liver: any thoughts on plastic media blasting??

OH MY GOD Andrew, where did you buy this car? When? What kind of motor does it have in it? Do you know any history on it (whereabouts, engine mods, seats?). My Dad had a car eerily like yours when I was very small. It was originally Irish Green, then White or Ivory, for sure, and it looks like yours except for the mirror and headlight trim rings. White, black window trim, RS flairs, 7/8s, 72S bumper, no rocker trim, 73 rear bumperettes, no front bumperettes, *****, COULD IT BE ??? I thought it was an S but I was 10 so I don't actually have a clue! He said he put Scheel seats in it, I know that (maybe they were changed out though). Here's some pics, one in green (from about 1980 I would suspect), then as it left my Dad's hands in 1987..

I am convinced this is the car, and I'm stunned by that fact..

Just noticed...my Dad left the turn signal surrounds and the headlight rings chrome. The 3rd pic shows the car with white rings and black surrounds, done by the then 3rd(?) owner, after my Dad (he was the 2nd owner). What does your car have, I can't tell?

One more (notice the license plate )

Are you going to keep the black trim or revert to chrome?

Scott - From the pictures, I suspect this was your dads car

Some details:
1970 911E
Engine is a 2.2L S
Weber Carbs (PMO Carb conversion sticker still on Air filter housing)
Steel S Front bumper
Trim was painted / powdercoated all black at one point
There was a Porsche Owners Club Badge in the center of the rear engine grill (seen in your pic of the rear)
Fuchs 7 / 8s with polished lips
Square speakers on rear shelf (seen in first pic)
H-4 lights with white trim rings - (sold the trim rings)

Only the mirror and seats look to have changed (Seats are standard)

Most noteable - the rear bumper is a different profile than a standard RS - The sides flares out for the RS flares, but also dip down to be on line with the sills.

I bought it in Oregon last summer - he had it stored for a while, dropped a tire on it and had it fall off the jack stands. I guess he called it and day and eBayed it.

Regards,
Andrew M

In answer to a few other questions:
- I'll get the car on the E registry soon
- I have a set of silver tirm that I'll be using
- I have Front and rear fiberglass bumpers that I'll be putting on
- Colour is going to be Sea Blue / Oxford Blue (Dupont lists as 329 Sea blue / Oxford blue as Dalmation blue, just to add fuel to the 'there is no Dalmation blue' fire)

Regards,
Andrew M

Andrew, if you EVER think of selling this car, IMHO, Scott should be the first person you call...it would be a great memorial to Scott's dad for the car to eventually end up in the hands of his son...
