torch for removing plate bushings
 

I've read where some people have used a torch to heat up the spring plates from the inside in order to remove the OEM bushings.


What type of torch works best? Propane, MAP, Oxy-Acetylene?


Thought I'd ask before I buy...

I just removed mine yesterday & today. I didn't use heat. I just cut (a pita but you peel them by cutting with a sturdy utilty knife) & then use a wire brush (on a drill or a bench grinder) to get the remainder. The wire brush cleaned them easily & sets the stage for a quick coat of rattle can paint.

Mount the plate in a vice, use a stanley knife to make a single cut across the bushing, pry the edge up with a screwdriver, clamp some vise grips on to the lifted edge, pull the bushing with the vise grips away from the mount whilst 'slicing' across the bottom of the bush where it connects to the plate. Work your way around and the the bushing will come off easy enough, then use a softer wire brush to remove the remaining detritus.

Easy peasy.

To answer the question asked, propane is fine.

Yes, propane is plenty adequate. I've done this with and without heat and I can say without reservation, the job is 10X easier with heat! No exageration.

use propane and a wire brush to remove the solids when the part are hot, also clean the area.
