Duck food

The Duck is be fed this week in the form of SSI's and a new(to her) Dansk stainless one out. Many thanks to Island911 for coming over and jump starting the project - he climbed under and started ripping parts off while I was still on email. Oh, and rdane, I really didn't take off from work, I was doing R&D for an upcoming project . The project is easier than I thought. We used Island's patented "dremelyournutsoff" method and it worked great. No busted studs!! She should be back on the streets by the weekend.

I'll be interested to hear your butt-dyno results. If I can scrounge up some money I'd like to add the same to my car after the next smog/registration this summer.

Nice work guys. Mark, I may have to stop by tomorrow to check out your work. Oh, and by the way, I am extremely jealous.

Did the 79 have both thick and thin flanged SSI's?

Bob, not sure what year the changover to thick flange happened, but all I read says all 79 were thin. I did a visual before buying.

Nostat - I hope I can feel the diff. I do have a baseline dyno run from a few weeks ago. I may have to pop for another to prove or disprove the claims.

Come on by Scott.

Ah-yes . ..the patented "dremelyournutsoff" method; and the joy of carbide cutters.

Here's one that held on, even after being split. (shows the cut though)

Mechanical Engineers have a saying; Anything is possible, with enough force . . .and the proper lubrication.

edit: I supose that if the SSIs are Duck Food, the above would be Duck Doo.

Tell me more about the DREMELTHENUTS OFF!

You don't cut all the way to the stud, right?

How do folks feel about a slight convincing with a small and lighly adjusted 3/8 impact on these?

George

Mark, what muffler were you running before? I thought you were running a dual out. What kind of gains are you expecting, ballpark figure?

This is the duck right?

Mark, I'm not sure you'll feel a power increase, although you might. Or perhaps you will think you do. And since perception is reality.....

But regardless of whether they increase power (they should, a little anyway), you will like them. Particularly if you are getting rid of the unequal length/goofy siameezed stock crap. Your engine will be happier with the free-er flowing, equal length units, and you'll be able to sense the engine's happiness. Plus, these units are lighter than stock. And WAY more beautiful.

Hey guys,
I'll wait to see what the real dyno says for hp/torque change. It's hard to say if I'll "feel" a 5 - 10% increase.

The Flowmaster dual out was very cool but always was meant as a transition till I could get the headers - I loved the Flow sound though. My original thought was to go with a dual out Dansk or Triad, but I'm more sensitive to cabin resonance than I used to be, hence the single out. I hear rumor that SSI is testing their own design of 911 muff to mate to their headers. I'll be interested in seeing that, if it happens.

Using the dremel to break loose the rusted nuts is Island's method. Worked really well for those of us without a torch or the competency to operate one. We used a carbide spiral bit to grind a notch into the side of the nut. Then broke the nut open with a hammer/screwdriver. The barrel nuts unscrewed without much objection.

Shuie, yes that's the duckster. Bob, the muff is a stainless Dansk. The tip is 2 1/4 ID.

Tonight is some clean up and replace oil lines. Film at 11:00.

I have had Mark's Flowmaster in my garage for about a month. It should be going on my 3.2 this week. I am in agreement with Mark, where I look at the Flowmaster as a temporary fix until I get SSI's, but this may change once I install it and chip my car. I've seen the arguments for and against SSI's on a 3.2. I will have to give the SSI's due consideration.

Looks great Mark! Nothing like having SSI's underneath. Did you ever source a new rear valence?

Question Mark or Island, was this stud off Mark's car? If so what did you do about it? Did it break or what? I'm begining to think I may be able to DIY this project. Was there any problems with the barrel nuts? Are they nuts or bolts? on PET they look like nuts.

That one (stud) unscrewed from the head. (none broke . . .we never torqued any that hard)

I gotta say, Island approached this in a real cogent/engineer type way. We only used his 1/4 breakover to loosen the nuts so we didn't put undue stress on the studs. I was pretty hesitant to do the project for fear of breaking one/some. It's still not a project for someone without mechanical skills, but I now think the average diy shadetree can handle it.

Harlan, I got a valance off ebay for $30. It was worth every damn penny ): .

I've just gotta say this thread perfectly illustrates one of the many reasons this board is so fantastic. I never would have thought of Island's particular "dremel the nuts off" approach (even though after reading this thread it almost seems common sense). Thanks Mark and Island.
