Details on installing CHT & Voltmeter
 

I've searched the forum on specifics on how to install CHT and voltage gauges that I just bought but no luck.

I'm going to wire the volt gauge into a switched hot lead under the dash....any specific recommendations which ones (fused etc)?

On running the CHT wiring to the engine from the dash, what route have others used?

On installing the thermocouple washer under the spark plug, I was planning on #3 but how do I avoid breaking the lead while tighting the plug down? Do I need to bend up the lead?

Finally, I was planning on connecting the illumination bulbs to the existing dash light circuit...I presume I should install a fuse in this circuit at the same time since its unfused?

I just did this. Tyson at TRE wired my voltmeter. There are plenty of hot lines under the dash. The radio or the cigarette lighter come to mind.

I used the #5 cylinder for the CHT, and was unable to get a plug to seat in the top hole (I have a twin-plugged motor), but had no problem with the bottom one. You do have to bend the point where the sender ring attaches to its lead.

As a precaution, I would put a piece of electrical tape around the lead where it comes out of the hole. That's where I saw some fraying.

For the probe wiring, go to an electronics or aircraft surplus store and look for some heavy Teflon or fiberglass sleeving material [tubing, but for wires rather than fluid transfer] ... a diameter around 3/16" or 4 mm should work. You want a piece just a milimeter or so shorter than the spark plug seating plane-to-valve cover seating plane for the air seal on the Beru connector. Prep the probe leads by putting a very short piece of thin heatshrink tubing from the washer out to the vertical riser where the wires need to be protected by the stiff sleeve ... parallel to the Beru connector. Put some of the thin heatshrink on the wires so they can pass under the air seal with minimal 'bump' profile.

who is your source for the CHT? I want to install one as well.

I would think AircraftSpruce and Specialty Co. could fix you up with a CHT or other ...aircraft-inspired gauges....
