Question Colapsible Spare Dammage

So,

I inflated my spare to check it out from my 74'. I noticed a rip in the sidewall.

What do you all think, is this spare toast?

I don't know if you can buy a new one. People always have them for sale. Check out Ebay or the classifieds here on Pelican. I have one, but the shipping would probably be $$ .

I just read something about spare tires needing to be replaced, even if they are not used, after about ten years.

Sorry, if I ruined a sale. I just would not have felt right if I didn't share this information.

Here is two articals I quickly found on searches.

Does anyone know if they are available new?

I would figure on a spare, you will be driving at "I am glad to be driving home and not stuck on the side of the road" speed so the risk of blowing a spare is lower.

If you carry a couple of cans of punctire seal and a punture repair kit you can leave your spare at home...the only thing these wont fix is a tire that came apart.......now you have bigger problems anyway.
(I know I know the tire shops hate to see tire in a can whaaa)

I just called several places (Discount Tire, Firestone, Bridgestone, etc.). The only place that had them was the Porsche dealer for $416.40...

I don't think I will be replaceing mine anytime soon... Mine is 20 years old.... I'll just drive slow, if I have to use it.

To answer the question on use and reuse:

I used my 22 yr old spare last fall, and I was shocked by how well it worked. I drove about 2 miles on it at ~50 mph. No problems. It is now deflated, and sitting in the car.

Sorry to see your ripped tire. Hope it wasn't found becuase you needed it.

I pump mine up every year or so. Leaving it out is not a good idea as the spare is part of the "Crumple Zone" and absorbs front end shock in the event of a head on accident.

I am sure Easy Porsche or Parts Heaven can supply a replacement for west coasters....dC automotive on the east coast...

+1

Despite many flats I have not had to change a tire on the side of the road after almost 20 years of driving.
