915 sounds bad

Any ideas what might be up with my trans?
I get a pretty good scuffing sound with a load on it. Say shifting from first to second when I'm on the gas as normal.
When I let off alittle the noise get quieter.

I checked the gear oil level and it was fine. I pulled the drain plug and found lots of metal shavings on the plug

It shifts fine in all gears but it seems like a bearing or something .
Any ideas what may be shot?

the 4 point ball bearing on the pinion shaft may be bad, or the retainer plate that clamps it to the diff housing may be shot, allowing the shaft to walk back and forth. it can damage the ring and pinion over time.

John How costly is this tranny fix ?
Is this something that can be done without taking apart the entire tranny?

the trans is 25 yo, so it should probably get the works. you don't generally go in and just fix one issue and leave the rest. shift sleeves will be worn, syncros polished, etc. about $2K probably, if all the gear sets and ring and pinion are still ok. hard to say for sure until it's down and you're looking at all the parts.

I just had the engine rebuilt and one of the reasons I bought the car was because the tranny was rebuilt about 4 years ago.
