So after 1 year of ownership...

So after 1 year of ownership, these are the top things I've learned:

1. These cars are not hard to work on nor expensive to maintain (if you DIY).
2. Very reliable.
3. Hauls arse.
4. Handles twisties like it's on rails, that is if you don't floor it before the apex...otherwise it can increase your heart rate too fast. Still better handling than anything else I've driven.
5. Pelican Parts and this BBS (you guys/gals) rock.
6. People love these cars. Many strangers are compelled to check it out, compliment her, and ask questions.
7. Out of necessity I grew up as a VW mechanic. Now for fun I'm a Porsche mechanic! (sort of).
8. You can have all sorts of fun in second gear flying out of 90* turns at 6000 rpm.
9. Built like a tank.
10. Redlines in an instant. Even a stock California Carrera can do 0-60 in under 6 seconds without dropping the clutch. (No I'm not a drag racer but did test her limits a couple times.)
11. Incredible brakes!
12. The sound of that flat six always brings a smile to my face. The wife even loves hearing it just idle.
13. Stereo? We don't need no stinkin' stereo! (See # 12).
14. Ain't nothing much else as sublime as a warm summer evening run without the roof.
15. I still won't park where I can't keep an eye or ear on it. (working on that.)
16. For the price of a new honda accord you can be driving a well sorted and beautiful 911.
17. Don't use it for short trips. These cars love to get warm and then fly.
18. I am obsessed with 911's - Earlies, Mids, RSRs, SCs, Carreras, 993's - I love 'm all.
19. Small pieces of FedEx envelopes taped under the rear Targa top clips stop squeaks fast and can't be seen.
20. There is NO substitute.

And now, gratuitous pic:

Agree on every point. Your car? Nice, very nice...and a great color.

Wil Ferch 04-08-2005 02:20 PM

Exactly!!

.....substitute "sunroof" in the proper context of #14...same smile... !!

i have only driven mine a total of about 100 miles since i got it back in january, and i still love it! even the trip around the apt complex is fun...a lot of things needed to be fixed, but all of that comes to a close tuesday (fingers crossed), i can hardly stand the wait...nice car, hope i enjoy mine as much as you seem to your's

rrpjr 04-08-2005 03:11 PM

Well said.

Drago 04-08-2005 03:44 PM

It's all about perspective.

Well, after 3 years of daily driving my car it just seem like any other car....until I actually drive another car.

FWIW, I drove my brothers WRX the other day. I went into it expecting to be impressed as it seems everybody just loves those things. Came away quite dissapointed. Touchy brakes, no torque, soft suspension and I just kept waiting and waiting for the so-called turbo lag. Where was the boost? I sure missed it.

All in all it was everything my Carrera isn't, and that's a good thing.

RANDY P 04-08-2005 03:54 PM

There is nothing like a nasty, hair trigger, loud, stiff butched-out 911. Mine was locked up for 5 mos. while it was crappy out. Getting it out of the garage Monday made me realize how much I've missed it.

Nothing drives like a 911.

Steve87-911 04-08-2005 03:59 PM

Thanks for the kind words about my car guys. Makes me feel more objective and not biased in my opinion. And I'm glad you all concur with my post. Now I realize that I'm not alone in my borderline hobby/mental illness.

KCinBR 04-08-2005 06:09 PM

Except a Sunday morning run as the sun comes up. The whole world is asleep except you and your flat six. Try it some time!

A self proclaimed "VW mechanic" and you've never driven a 914? LOL

BTW, I agree with everything you've said. I took my SC out last night for a spin after putting new Konis on the front and new brake lines. It's so much fun.

That would be like... in the morning... I don't do mornings!

Mostly correct, but I have big hands and work in the Texas heat

1. These cars are not hard to work on nor expensive to maintain (if you DIY).

Again, my big hands and buying a neglected, abused, but Cheap pcar makes that first statement incorrect for us who bought a car that advice said not to. I'm about $9k more into mine in 15 months than planned.
2-20 are all agreed on.

Driving them makes all points moot. Getting home and hearing the wife ***** is even worth it. She cannot drive a manual (I reinforce this) so I just smile and sometimes go drive more. Only the driver understands. These cars are "not cheap", but are fun. The right drive and a 911 makes everything else unworthy. Sadly, my best friends wifes car may outperform my Carrera (strait line), but that car can never place a smile on my face like my 911.

How could I forget?!! I guess maybe since it's been over 20 years since I drove a 914. Yes, 914's are a blast to drive and the balance of them makes them handle like nothing else. Now working on them thru that little trap door is a different story.

vash 04-09-2005 03:46 AM

MISSED YOU GUYS! and my 911. after a month of exploring parts of asia, the first thing i did when i got home tonight was; open the garage door and put the trickle charger on the battery. i am cruisin tomorrow! rain or shine. then i took the backpack and luggage inside. third thing, drove and picked up my two dogs.

now i cannot effen sleep! jetlag sucks.
