WOW cant believe this

took my 2.7 for tune up and valve adgustment because it seems like it was running on 5 cyls. mech looked and listened to a bit of a hiss and told me it was the dreaded head stud problem.we decided to do a compression test first and he couldnt get one plug out the reason it was difficult was the previous comp test they left an extender in so the spark plug wasnt even fireing.Has anyone ever had this happen before?Do you think that has been theproblem?I sure hope so as he was about to drop the motor. Please let me know if this could be the cause of the symptoms Thank you

What is an extender? An extension? Why wouldn't the guy just remove it, put the other plugs back and and try it out instead of planning to drop the engine? Seems like a lot less work.

Unless I'm missing something....

Hi Steve Iguess he wants to put new plugs in first also i dont know if extender is the right term but it looked like a long socket that screwed into the head and the spark plug into that.Iwas told that they use these if they have a problen reaching the plug when doing the test he is trying this before dropping the engine.

Something like this?

That should not be in there when the engine is running.
How long have you had the car and who did the last work on it. Someone needs a nasty phone call. It's curious how, if that was really in there, the plug wire would fit on at all! I don't recall off hand if there's enough room for one of those to fit next to the plug (somehow) where you couldn't see it and still get the plug wire on. I doubt it though.

How on earth did the wrench even think he had the plug wire seated with that extension in there? If the extender really accepts a plug into it, then the plug wire dust cover thing would not be flush as it should be.

My bet is that someone had left one of these, the thing in the middle, screwed into the plug hole last time a compression test was done and then someone screwed the spark plug into the back of the adapter, but I could be wrong.

Funny that I did a search on google for that picture and the best pic that I found just happened to be on the drivewerks site. Apparently it really is a small world wide web.

Sure that's a problem.

If it's in there you'll have a miss. I doubt you'd get combustion in that cylinder with the plug so far out of the dome.

Also I doubt the combo of that thing and the plug would seal very well and the hiss you hear is blow by.

As to damage, i doubt it would do any mechanical damage but all of that unburned fuel in the cylinder will wash away the oil film on the cylinder wall.

Depending on how long you ran it like that I would think at worst you'd have a scored cylinder and some shot piston rings.

I'd get an oil change into that puppy to get rid of the diluted oil.

How did the new compression check #'s play out anyway.
