CV Joint Axle Removal

Guys,
I'm in the garage trying to replace my CV joint halfshafts. I can't get the drivers side stub axle out. There doesn't seem to be room between the shock tube and e-brake line. Even if I undo the lower shock mount, there doesn't seem to be much manuvering room with the heat exchanger right there. What am I missing? Does the ebrake cable have to come out, how does that work. I've got a g-50 carrera with the later style axles.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hey Kevin,

I did mine without removing anything other than the lower shock bolt. Do you have the "101 projects" and the Bentley manual? Between the two, it gives great instructions. I managed to do this job when I discovered a blown CV during my first oil change. Talk about a newbie being scared! I sat down, read the manuals and went to it.

You WILL need a HEFTY impact wrench to get the axle bolt off, something like 400#/ft and a big torque wrench to get it back on, 325#.

Hope that helps,

-Chris

PS - This was my post about it, wish I had a digital camera at the time...

Well, the oil change went well.........

Do you have another jack under the arm? I lifted mine a bit to allow the shock to come off easier. It only took a few taps on the axle to free it up and it easily came out the inner side. No interference I remember. Ken

OK, is there a trick to getting the lower shock mount bolt off. I've got 2 jacks and have raised and lowered the trailing arm at different angles, but that bolt is on there. I've breaker bars and extension pipes, but litte room for them. Is an impact driver needed?

That's what I used, but I wouldn't think it would be necessary. Have you lubed it yet? Heat? It should come off fairly easily....

Alright I got them. The Bentley says something about keeping the car low to the ground or on its wheels when doing this, but that doesn't leave much room for manuvering. I jacked it up as high as I though my stands would handle and had plenty of room to get my nuts off.

And then the shafts slid right out.
Thanks guys.
