15x7 and 16x7 wheel guys-some questions
Sorry to flog an old subject but I'm getting ready to upgrade from my 15x6 wheels and Pirelli P6000 tires. I have done a few hours of searches and reading on this much discussed topic and opinions vary on what will work on what car. I'm looking for a combination that will work on all cars, not just some cars. I'm not trying to push the envelope-just step it up a bit. I want to improve handling, not create a rough ride, and maintain vintage appearance-silver spokes for sure. I don't want to modify my car at all but maybe rolling and/or camber if absolutely necessary. I've already directly e-mailed some of you who have these wheel/tire combinations. I hope you don't mind the intrusion and thanks in advance for any help.
Here's what I've narrowed it down to: 15x7 Fuchs all around with 205/55/15 SO3s or ES100s. or 16x7 Fuchs all around with 205/50/16 " ". What I'm looking for is input from people that have those wheel/tire combinations and their opinions. Do they work well? Rub at all? Would you do anything different? Recommendations based on having lived with the above wheel/tire combinations? Thanks! |

The 15x 7 with that low a profile tire will accelerate better than the 16x7 combo. The smaller diameter is the same as installing slightly "shorter" gears. The smaller tire usually gives you a stiffer ride- but es 100's have pretty soft sidewalls- so it could be 6 of one /half dozen of the other sort of thing. SO 3's are a better bet for handling- albeit at a higher cost. USUALLY, the 205 on the 7 x 16 should fit without rolling the rear lips or increasing neg camber. Up front you usually have to do either and sometimes both. Why? You 911S was built back in 1977- though the factory did a very good job at assembly, there were some variances in production on the rear quarters. Now add the time interval since it was produced and all the road miles your car has experienced. Control arm slightly tweaked? previous fender benders? really lowered suspension settings?, and that is why it may cause some rubbing on the rear 1/4's or... not at all! We've seen both combinations on the 74-77 cars and the end look is subjective. The end result with regards to performance give the shorter 15" combo the nod, due to the better accel times you can achieve.

I went from 16x7&6's to 15x7 all around. Currently running 215/60 (came with wheels), only slightly smaller rubber than what I had with the 16" wheels. Clearance is good, only the occasional rub on larger bumps (usually when turning). I'm looking to go with smaller rubber in the near future though for reasons TRE mentioned.
