Paint in Portland
Anybody in or near Portland know a great place to get a complete bare metal repaint done on an early 911? I'm 2 hours away but not having much luck finding people eho have done a lot of 911's before here. I'm looking for someone who will also do the fitting on FG rear bumper and decklid, and take off some of the trim and replace it. (I'll do some myself, but not all).
Thanks! |

Randy-
I'd try several folks. Chris Watson, in Grants Pass, does all of the paintwork for the guy there that restores 356s (see recent speedster story in Excelence). I haven't seen his work in person, but have heard good things about the product and the person. I know that theere is (was?) a Porsche body specialist in the Portland area that, I think, was/is called German Restorations. Finally, I'd give Jeff Gamroth a call at Rothsport in Tualatin. He would certainly know who's who. Let me know what you find. I'm looking for someone to restore my aluminum decklid sometime in the future. -Scott

Randy,
Another place to check out. They are more of a "production" type body shop, but I have seen quite a few Porsches in Precision Paint (near Sunset Porsche). I may be mistaken, but I think they do quite a bit of the "dealer" repairs.

I have found that the dealer repair places pretty much refuse to do bare metal resprays. Not enough money in it. They prefer to do quick, quick out insurance repairs. Not to say they won't, but I had to search a long time for a place that would do a complete respray of my car and they acted like they were doing me a favor...

Also, a place called Steve's Restorations is VERY popular with the high $ hot rod set. The hot rod set KNOWS paint & body...

I would not take anything to Precision,.....
![]() Frankly, this is a tough question as most folks willing to do such a thing are either expensive (and VERY busy), or are not consistent. Personally, I would talk to Tom Black. He's not cheap, but he is very good and you get what you pay for, especially with paint jobs. Jeff Gamroth & I have gone through several local area shops experiencing with problems about inconsistent & shoddy work and we are trying a new one,........again. I'll know within a few months.

To second what Steve says, I have heard that Tom Black is VERY good. Where he is, I don't know. Somewhere in NE Portland mebbe? I heard that he paints all of Monty Shelton's cars.

I once looked at a 911 that the seller told me had been painted by Steve's. The paint has several visible drips and runs in it. This may have been a different "Steve's" or the seller may have been lying, but I would want to get more information before taking it there.
Steve (of Rennsport): Let us know when you find someone good in town. Someone at Artistic Autobody once told me that Gammroth was using them, but I was not happy with some work that they did on my 951. [BTW did you get the PM that I sent you through the Early 911S Registry site?]

Our local PCA chapter took a tour of Steve's Restorations today, and I can assure you that the 911 referenced in my previous post was NOT painted by these people. Steve's does brilliant body and paint work. It is, however, probably too expensive for anything I would ever have done on my car. Most of the paint jobs on the hot rods in their shop are easily worth more than my car. They had pictures of a few cars on which they spend between 10,000 and 15,000 man hours for their obviously well-heeled customers.

Nu Way Body Shop has experience with Porsches. When I took mine in for repair, there were two other early Porsches in the shop. They did superior work on the 911T I used to own. The owner even has a picture of a 911 in his office.

I will indeed let you know when we find someone who is very good, can deliver a job when promised, and are not ungodly expensive. ![]() We rarely do concours-type restorations since thats not our thing, but we expect a paint job that is as good as the original Porsche job or better. My apologies sir, I must have overlooked that PM,..... ![]() ![]()

BTW, I just got an est. to do a complete color change on my 911 of $8,100 - not including polishing the bright work or any 'extra' body work needed.
