Coversion of a Grey Market 79SC to a track car.

I'm looking at a 79SC gray market car. It has the smog junk added to make it cal legal. I want to turn the car into a track/auto cross only car. How difficult and expensive is it to remove the smog and current exhaust junk and throw a set of headers on the car as I won't need any heat. This is a project that I want to work on over the next couple of years. I plan on gutting the interior, throwing in a roll cage and racing seats, upgrading the torsion bars and adding sway bars, shocks, etc. I'm an Okay wrench, however I don't want to get get too far over my head here. All ideas/thoughts are welcome.

TIA

Not a big deal at all. The tough part will be getting the exhausts removed if the mounting hardware is rusted. But it's not like lots of others haven't done it and posted their experience on this BBS. Try a few searches.

John thanks for the input. I did run a couple of searches and didn't get much info, thus the post. I'll try using a couple of different variations of words and see what else I can turn up. I'm more concerned about the smog pump and what will need to be done "after" it's removal, if anything. I'm sure there must be some adjustments necessary with the F/A mixture, etc., to get the car to run correctly. I just want to know what I'm getting into if I decide to go this route.

Thanks!
