HELP with purchase coming into CT from another state!!!!

I just moved to CT and do not know the process. Anyone that can help with the process of buying a car from a distance and bringing it into the state, it would be greatly appreciated. How do you drive the car back if you do not have the title yet? I am clueless as far as this process goes.

Bill,
Here are few things that will help you start the process
1)-Let your insurance co know about the possible purchase although you don't have to do this,still helpful if you ask me
2)- Go to motor vehicle dept ( MVD ) and get a temporary tag for the car,shouldn't cost you more then few dollars
3)-Make sure you pick up the forms ( bill of sale ) from the MVD and have it appropriatly signed/notarized at the time of sale.
4)- As far as i know you don't have to pay the sales tax at the time of purchase esp if you are buying out of state but check with your MVD any way.

not sure if it works everywhere but if the car is licensed when you buy it, as opposed to being off the road for the past year or more, you should be able to get an "in transit" permit or a 10 day tag to move the vehicle. You will need to get insurance to that vin faxed to you before you will be issued a temporary tag.

Yes you are right about the VIN # and it typically costs around $10-$20 for that temp tag.

I just received shipment of my 911sc from CA. I am a CT resident and this is what I had to do to get the car reg in CT.
1.) Add the car to your insurance and get a CT insurance card for the car. It can be a fax copy
2.) Go to a full service DMV office with the insurance card, bill of sale, and title (that has been signed over to you). You will need to complete the buyers info on the back and sign it at the DMV counter, witnessed by DMV staff
3.) Pay the sales tax. Cash or personal check (I think)
4.) Buy a temp tag ($20 for 1o day/$40 for 20 day) to drive the car to a DMV emmissions station for the smog test. Pay $20 cash and collect pass cert.
5.) Return to DMV for real plates and pay full reg fee.

I have heard of some states that do offer a transit tag but you need the title in hand for that and you have to go to the sellers DMV office. My car was shipped to NJ and I drove it from there...with the CA plates still mounted as I couldn't get into the back window to mount the temp plate becuase of all of the spare parts the PO packed away for me!

Anyway, best of luck with the DMV. Go early and wear comfortable shoes becuase you will be in lines most of the day!

Bill- I did this a LONG time ago. I think you need can get temp "tags" fro the state in which it is currently registered.

So. step 1, go to CT DMV web site, and read thoroughly. step 2....call your insurance agent, he will set you up with appropriate ID cards. PM me for a great guy if you need one . Stpe 3, assuming you are driving it back, go to state, get titel signed over, a bill of sale from current owner, and head to that states DMV. Present those three items, and some $ and you will get temp tags. Check that states web site for particualrs.

Step 4...go to your local DMV and present it all again, and then head off to the emissions station the safety station (depending on how old the car is) and then, once you have all the papers, you can get a permanent plate. (CT is goin thru a weird thing with the emissions checking, that step may be skipped, and I am not sure, but you migth beable to do all teh in state driving on the out of state temp tags, which simplifies things.)

But, remember, use the web, and check the site...the DMV is in constant flux when it comes to these rules. Also, going in the middle of the week is MUCH faster than the Thursday night or Saterday AM routine. Also, beware that the DMV closes if the Governers wife is in a bad mood, or there is snow in Jersey, or it an Englsh bank holiday!
