Would this hurt anything besides your ears?

I wonder what sort of motor that was?
As far as hurting anything? Aside from getting CO poisoning or singing any extremity that got too close, I don't think so. But then as someone once pointed out -- "It's not the poison, but the dosage". As long as you didn't do it for more then a couple of seconds I doubt that there would be any serious damage.

In regard to our motors, Porsche recommends to never run the motor without the exhaust since the exhaust is used to keep some of the heat around the valves so they don't cool too quickly.
Cheers, James

With any engine, it's not wise to run it (except for a very short time) without, at least, some type of exhaust manifold or header. Otherwise the rapid cooling of the exhaust valves, when it's shut down, can cause them to warp. I'm sure some engine and valve designs are more susceptible to this than others, but it's probably still a good "rule of thumb".

I think the pipes on a mustang are only 12" long...

Yeah, but these are only zero inches long. We used to immediately plug the headers, when I was running a 356 Carrera four-cam with headers, with tennis balls immediately upon shutdown because the word was that the cold air trying to flow up them could warp the valves. Maybe it was an urban legend, I dunno...

it could bend the valves. I would never do that.

They did use Allisons in boats, tanks, and probably multiple other uses. I have heard about the valve situation but never have seen it first hand. I would never run without exhaust.. maybe to see if the engine will fire but ony for second or two. If you do run it you will find that you will be down on power... Although the engine in the picture seems to have plenty-o-power. lol
