Mobil1 Transmission Fluid

I have an 87 Carrera that needs a transmission fluid change ASAP. My understanding is that Mobil1 is the way to go with the G50. A couple of questions:

- What grade do I need?

- Does anyone have a good source? Our host does not seem to have it.

Thanks!

Hey Mark,

We are searching for the same thing, but different. I want Red Line. I looked through the archives and then talked to my trusted wrench and Red Line was the pick.

Just an FYI, I have heard good things about both. Someone told me that Mobil 1 was readily available at any parts store. If I can't get Red Line, I may go Mobil.

Mobil 1 gear oil only comes in one weight, 75W-90. That is the correct fluid to use in the G50. Should be available at whatever chain parts stores are in your area - AutoZone, Pep Boys, even Walmart. You'll need 3 quarts. Be sure you can remove the filler plug before you drain it! And watch your elbow - the fine threads on the plugs have a way of being very hard to loosen, the letting go all of a sudden.

IMHO for a G50 it is hard to go wrong with either mobil 1 75w-90 or red line equivalent.

Mobil 1 is LSD compatable. Got it in mine - no problems.

Agreed, the 1-qt 75w-90 mobil 1 sold in the US is good for a LSD or non-LSD G50. with the Red Line, you will want to get the 75w-90 GL5 which has limited slip additive, if you have an LSD G50. If you don't have an LSD, you can either use that OR the 75w-90ns GL5 which does not have a limited slip additive. In a non-LSD G50, it really doesn't matter, either is fine.

This may be a stupid question, but is the 3 qt capacity the same for the LSD G-50?

Mark, That's not a stupid question at all, but the differential would not change the size of the transmission so the answer would be yes.

That's what I thought, but I wanted to be sure.

Thanks everyone!
