I actually had two at once back in HS. They were the 2nd and 3rd cars that I ever owned, first was a black '71 that I got from my neighbor for $500 'cause he smacked the front in a rear-ender. Interesting history on that one, the P.O., (my neighbor), was a lawyer for the Fuller Brush Co. who later became our U.S. Senator in 1980, (I think), and was a rising star who was considered GOP presidential material until a small-time scandal brought him down. We spent some time ironing out a price based on his insurance settlement, went to a body shop together, etc. Nice guy, his name was Dave Durenberger. Here is that one, I just scanned it now from my old photo album, it says "winter of '76-'77" on the back:

The second one was a '73 914 2.0, bare bones w/o appearance package in Marathon Blue. It had low miles but the RF fender was crunched, (can't see in photo), guess I had a thing about cars that needed body repair. Or more accurately, I couldn't afford a perfect one. My God, did it ever drive better than the '71. Night and day. More torque, tight side-shifter, sway bars, just a massively improved car. Here it is either giving or getting a jump, (can't remember which), on a sub-zero MN. day in the dead of winter 1976-77. That is Lake Harriet in the background, for any Mpls. people:

I didn't start with a 914, but did own a 74 914 2.0

I loved the way it drove, but couldn't get past the sound and power of the motor. I considered a 6 swap but after looking at the costs...decided I could sell it and buy a 911. One of these days I would like to own a 914-6 with a 3 liter or bigger...that would be fun!

After 20 years I have re-entered the Porsche world with an 84 911. I started those 20 years back with an orange 914 2.0. My brother bought one right after his first ride in mine. We loved those cars. Now he's out looking to buy another Porsche, too. I'm also looking for a 914...just a great little fun-to-throw around car!

In 1979 I bought my first Porsche, a 71 914.
Drove it all through college, put about 70,000 miles on it before I wrapped at around a tree due to pure stupidity.

About 6 years ago I bought a 74 2 liter 914, ended up turbocharging it, ran great but someone from Atlanta offered me too much money for it.
Next was a 73 914 that got a 350 chebby. Ran great but I never fell in love with it, sold it and bought the SC and turbocharged it.
I originally planned to fix it up and sell it but fell in love with it and prolly won't ever get rid of it.

In 1975 I took my wife to the Porsche Dealer They had a 914 & 911 on the showroom floor - I asked her which one she wanted....and to my surprise - I want the copper one(914) the other one lookes like a Frog . LMAO
It was a lemon, she got a 912E about a year later

I did? I bought a 72 which had org. paint back in 1990. It was a funky light green color. Slow, but handled like I could not believe. It had campo. wheels on it, lowered, blah,blah..... I was driving on the freeway and noticed mass amounts of smoke coming out of it. Pulled over thinking the car was on fire-thank god not. The damn trans. filler plug came out and all the oil drained out. Went down to a VW shop that was open on a sat. and purchased a plug for a buck, got some thick-ass trans fluid. Went back to the car which was still on freeway. Filled it up and hoped for the best. I drove that car for another 1.5 years until it was unbearable to hear that thing whine like crazy in fifth gear. Sold it a year later with the moter/trans pulled. I was goiong to put a v8 in it, but bought tobluforu

I started autocrossing a 1972 911 then had a 914 that went from stock to race car 914-6 for over 12 years .. the 914's are great for starting out .. they are go carts when done correctly

My first car was a new '73 914 2.0L. it cost $5280 from the dealer. I traded it in the next year with 25,000 miles for a '74 911 and got the same back on trade in.
Still think about it now and then.

Great thread. You know, I remember that race at Laguna Seca / Monterey Historics when Hurley in a green 914 came from a long ways back to beat that 911 at the finish.

Always wanted to drive a 914 on a mountain road sometime. 914-6 would be sweet I'm sure but they go for big bucks these days.

We never got them in Australia. Only ones we see here are private imports. They pop up cheap every now and again... I think I'd like one.

This is my 74. The motor was on the way out so I decided to purchase a 6 cylinder for her as well as a 87 carrera suspension. Dual plug 2.7 monster motor. Then I said WTF! Ill never get any of my my $$$ back so I bought a 73T. Now it is my pride and joy as well as my money pit.

I didn't know what a 914 was until about three or four weeks ago when I saw one getting chucked around a track. Couldn't believe it when I saw it was a porsche. I think they look very cool. Don't know what this thing on the track had in it but it sounded pretty good. I'd definitely like one. Walko, let me know if you ever find a good one & buy it - love to check one out a little closer.

My first 914 was also a 1970...I lke the early ones....3.0 with 964 cams...called it the Rocket....really moved. Was the 1999 PCA Zone 8 AX champ with that car...

I had two. One was a 914 2.0 '73 in college from '82 through '84. I did my first rebuild on it. Sold it to get a Fiero GT.

The second was a 1.7 '73 back in '93. I rebuilt that engine with trick parts and cams. That engine was great. I sold it after I bought my current 911SC.

The guy I sold it to wrecked it and the Teener group here kept track of the parts and scavenged it out. One guy raced the engine and it sucked a valve. They asked me if I had a warranty from where I had the head work done. That was 3 years after the rebuild.

I saw the Fuchs wheels and the extra set of 1.7 headers from that car last October at a swap meet.

I sometimes humor the thought of selling the 911 and getting a 914-6. I think the body design of the 914 is much more pleasing and timeless that any other car manufactured in that era.

I've told this story here many times. But, for the benefit and amusement of those that missed it, I bought a '72 914 9 mos. old in '72. When I divorced, she kept the car. Many years later, I bought it back from no. 1 and gave it to no. 2 to drive so she could keep her Targa in the garage. That didn't bother me as the Targa was quite expensive to maintain as a daily.

All in all, I had the 914 about 10 years with the ex having it on her own for about 3. But the kicker is, I had to buy the same car twice!. It got sold in '85 and went up the coast. Never saw or heard of it again.

Then I got the one MikeZ shows above 3 years ago for $500 and made it into what you see except for the six, which he installed. Good move.

The '72 was the first "Porsche" I owned, to answer the thread. Before that, it was many VW's, so it was a natural transition.
