I saw this car an unfinished mild V8 in a 71 targa that the owner wants to bail on. Good condition but not running. I also am looking at buying a 78 targa that runs well. I have a spare (except a few minor nuts and bolts) V8 kit that I bought off another guy that had parted out his car.

the questions that I have is do I get the 71 and the 78 and swap out the engines? In other words would the 71 be thought of as upgraded with a 3.0 and a 5 speed? or just fix the 71 to make the v8 work and forget the 78?

the 71 would be fun if it was upgraded but is it worth it?

both would be sold eventually or do I just put the 78's 3.0 in my 77 sell it and keep the other 78 car for a cab conversion and v8 swap.....I really want a cab.

If I didn't know better I'd think this was a Troll thread.
Has the tire smoke clouded your judgement? Folks around here think those old cars are holy grail of Porschedom.

If one car's already been wrecked and cut up by doing a V8 conversion on it, then just leave it.

If you must have the V8, then get the 71 and get it running.

If you want a real Porsche, get the 78 and enjoy it.

Just don't destroy another car by cutting it all up.

This car looks worth the rescue. Your idea is a good one. Putting an SC drivetrain in the '71 would be a really nice package.

You want an investment for the future? Find a 2.2 engine for that 1971. Once installed, you'll have a car that will continue to go up in value for years to come. And you won't have to remove the existing 901 tranny.

Second choice is to buy the '78 as is. Great car. Buy it. Drive it. Love it.

Third choice would be to transplant the 3.0 in the 1971. You'll instantly kill any increasing resale value but it would seriously kick ass if properly set-up.

But finishing that V-8 conversion? You might as well flush the money you'll invest right down the toilet. (But then there is a miniscule chance you could find someone with no knowledge of Porsches, who has never driven a Porsche, and wants something that doesn't drive like a Porsche when you're ready to sell.)

I don't think I agree with that. You're certainly not going to get less for the car with a 3.0 in it than you would with a 2.2 as long as the swap is well done and you're not looking to restore it to concourse condition.

The prices of stock early 1965-1973 911's have basically doubled over the last three years. (Which is kind of scary when you think that an excellent '72 911S selling for $22,000 then is now close to $50,000.) The majority of people in the market for a 70-71 911 are not looking for a 3.0 transplant, even though properly engineered, it's a faster car. The buyers are looking for a stock 2.2 because that's the car that's going to hold it's value over time. The 2.2 will always be worth more on resale than an equal condition 3.0 transplant.

The car is not in Daytona, it is a mid west state car.
I don't agree that a 3.0 would kill resale value (Like all the 3.6 conversions on this board) nor do I think that a properly done V8 would either.
A 2.2 would be costly to find and would only be worth more in concourse condition not for a daily driver. When 3.0 cars are a dime a dozen in good mech shape but poor body/ need paint I would just find an SC that is clapped out or wrecked and then part it out after using the drive train.
The trunk has not been converted for the conversion yet.
Just thinking about it for now.

that's a good looking '71...I'd just put it back to stock. (as much as I support the conversion cars)

Wow, if the value of mine doubled since I bought it three years ago, I'd sell it in a heartbeat and get a later 911. Of course mine's not quite stock... but someone who wanted it that way could get it that way.
