				Porsche finally came around...

I found this on another website just a few minutes ago... Porsche Motorsport North America + Penske Motorsports = Le Mans Prototype 2 A new LMP2 program was officially announced at Road Atlanta just minutes ago. Set to debut at this year's Petit Le Mans will be a new Porsche prototype, run by Penske Motorsport. The final two races of this season (Petit and Laguna Seca) will serve as tests for the new prototype before the team embarks on a full 2006 campaign. PMNA and PCNA commissioned Porsche AG to design and build the car. Peter Schwarzenbauer (PCNA President and CEO), "Our American racing customers have made it clear to us that they would like to move up several levels in ALMS competitions, as would we. We believe this new Porsche prototype program will provide the perfect means to do so and will generate added enthusiasm for sports car racing in America, especially with Penske Motorsports as our partner and initial entrant."

Hmmm - Penske and Porsche in a prototype... Banking on a heavy "deja-vu" factor I suspect. It can only be a good thing. Here's a link to the press release on the ALMS web site.

Pretty smart move IMHO from Porsche to go with LMP2, as next year's Le Mans rules which also govern the ALMS are heavily biased towards leveling the playing field between P1s and P2s. The invincible Audi R8s are gonna be much slower next year (restricted air intakes and smaller fuel tanks). The P2s have a shot at outright victory based on mileage and weight advantage. IF POrsche pulls it off, "giant Killer", if not " Class winner" anyway...
